Bridge across the Mersey

Saturday 8th November 2025, 12.15pm (day 5,189)

Silver Jubilee Bridge, 8/11/25

Before embarking on its final spread into its estuary, between Widnes (on the north bank) and Runcorn, the River Mersey narrows significantly. This convenient crossing point, known as the Runcorn Gap, has been exploited for hundreds of years, but it was only in 1961 that a proper road bridge was opened, and given the ‘Silver Jubilee’ name 15 years later. And, well, here it is, seen from the Widnes side. The second longest bridge I have walked across as part of my little walking project (after the Humber Bridge). Pedestrians take a rather exposed and vertiginous walkway that dangles off the main arch to the left, by the way.

Rush hour

Thursday 9th October 2025, 5.30pm (day 5,159)

Rush hour, 9/10/25

In the 20 years and 2 months I have been working in Manchester I have driven into work precisely six times. Three of those were in the first couple of months: of the three since, two were forced on me due to train strikes (and for those, I parked north of the centre and finished the journey by tram) and the other one was a Sunday morning. There are reasons for this. I’m not usually still in the area for full-on rush hour/Carmageddon but I was there this evening.

Market Street

Monday 23rd September 2024, 11.25am (day 4,778)

Back home: from Berlin on a Sunday morning to Hebden Bridge on a Monday one. At least I got out of the house today. This is a standard shot but the comparative lack of traffic was appealing. The sign to top left, less so, but I tried to make it look less obtrusive.

One way traffic

Monday 3rd June 2024, 8.40am (day 4,666)

Mancunian way from above, 3/6/24

Staying over in the Premier Inn after last night’s gig provides the opportunity to observe the morning traffic on the Mancunian Way from fifteen floors up. Heading west seems to be the route of choice, but the one car going east has the preferable journey at the moment, if you ask me.

Roadworks, ever more

Tuesday 31st October 2023, 11.15am (day 4,450)

Roadworks, 31/10/23

A terrifically dull situation, but that was my day for you, with much of the morning spent negotiating seemingly endless roadworks in order to run a relatively simple (but necessary) errand. And I did so in both directions too – this was on the way home. I was waiting at the latest red light, in case you want to report me to the traffic police.

Leaving for England

Thursday 22nd December 2022, 9.40am (day 4,137)

Clare & Joe, Dundee, 22/12/22

It’s not really accurate to say that we came up to Dundee to bring Joe “home” for Christmas. Home, for him, is up here now. You can’t see the windows of his place on this shot but it’s close by. But he was returned to Yorkshire, at least — by 4pm. I like the zones of red on this shot, spacing themselves across the bottom.

Car park, West Leeds

Wednesday 2nd March 2022, 7.25pm (day 3,842)

Farsley car park, 2/3/22

Another damp day. With only occasional breaks, it feels like it’s been raining for weeks. A misty car park somewhere in the western reaches of Leeds. In the distance another soul who, like me, is just glad to find a game on. This shot is a relative rarity for me, as it’s one where I don’t mind the cars.

Manchester fluddle

Wednesday 16th December 2020, 1.00pm (day 3,401)

Manchester puddle, 16/12/20

My penultimate day in Manchester, 2020. A year which has had fewer such days than expected. How often does the place display its appalling street drainage? I think this is a big contributor to the city’s reputation for wetness.

Brook Street, Manchester

Tuesday 1st December 2020, 8.15am (day 3,386)

Brook Street, 1/12/20

The traffic lights say go, for what cars there are. No social commentary today, I just like the effect of a fairly long zoom down Brook Street, taken on my way to the office.

Crossing Acomb Street

Monday 30th September 2019, 11.20am (day 2,958)

Acomb Street, 30/9/19

I go one way, the bird goes its way, the cat goes that. None of us necessarily find out about what the “NO” is so keen to dissuade us.
