Tableau: cows, turbine and Flagstaff Peak

Tuesday 14th January 2025, 12.40pm (day 4,891)

Cows, turbine and Flagstaff, 14/1/25

Whatever the wind farm on Deadwood Plain is doing to help St Helena generate power in a sustainable way, this particular turbine ain’t contributing. The cows seem stoic about the situation, though, as cows so often do. I passed on my way up Flagstaff Peak behind, at 2,257 feet above sea level. A century and a quarter ago, this place would have been crowded with tents and huts — it was a prison camp for those captured in the Boer War (fought so the British state could get its hands on gold and diamonds, before anyone tells you it had worthier motives).

Typical Hebden Bridge wing mirror

Wednesday 6th March 2024, 10.55am (day 4,577)

Wing mirror, 6/3/24

Sadly this is an all-too-common sight around the tight streets of Hebden Bridge, with the only place to park many cars being on the road. It’s not even just the traffic-facing side which gets whacked, I’ve seen (and, years ago when I still owned a car, experienced) enough examples of pedestrians taking them out too. Though admittedly it would take a pretty hefty person to cause this amount of damage.

Portal to another dimension

Friday 17th March 2023, 1.55pm (day 4,222)

Chadwick building reflection, 17/3/23

Normally I would object to photos with bins and boxes in them but, you see, this only looks like a grit bin. In fact, like that luggage trolley sticking out of the wall of King’s Cross on its way to Hogwarts, it is actually on its way to another dimension. The guy’s parallel self also makes a fleeting, fragmented appearance. All I need to do is step to the left, melt through the mirror and I can be there too…..

Broken bowl

Sunday 3rd January 2021, 6.20pm (day 3,419)

Broken bowl, 3/1/21

This post does not plough untouched furrows of excitement, I know, but then again, nor will January 2021 I suspect. Consider it an abstract; the smoothness of the apples contrasted with the sharp edge of the break. If you like.

Propped up

Tuesday 20th August 2019, 3.40pm (day 2,917)

Propped up, 20/8/19

I have run through various scenarios as to how this air conditioning unit ended up in this situation, and none of them are very plausible. Nor are explanations as to why it should remain like this and not just be removed. But mine not to reason why.

The morning after

Tuesday 5th June 2018, 7.30am (day 2,476)

Dead glasses, 5/6/18

It is perhaps better not to speculate on the fate of the former owner of these spectacles, forlornly lying abandoned on Canal Street in Manchester early today… One assumes that the position of the, let’s say, splodge is coincidental. But I guess it might not be.
