Watching Norway v Italy, Oslo Gardemoen airport

Tuesday 11th June 2013, 6.30pm (day 656)

Norway v Italy, 11/6/13

Gosh, here I am in an airport, that hasn’t happened much this year has it (sarcasm warning). Sat out a half-hour flight delay at Oslo airport (which doesn’t seem to be particularly near Oslo) by watching others watching Norway v Italy in the UEFA Under-21 championship: final score 1-1, if you’re interested. Slightly strange light on the guys in the middle but I like the shot anyway, it was taken very candidly and quickly so you never quite know how they’re going to turn out.

Tea break, Research Support conference

Monday 10th June 2013, 11.25am (day 655)

Conference tea break, 10/6/13

I know there are plenty of you who read this and probably don’t think I do any work, but here you go, some evidence of it anyway. Not that anyone is ‘working’ right at this moment, except the Italian chap silhouetted against the window. There was a spectacular view of the Oslo hinterland from this venue (the well-named Soria Moria hotel), but this is the first interior shot since my return to Europe on 28th May. I know it would have been better to get all the lines on the carpet straight as well as those on the wall, but hey.

On the Bergen-Oslo railway, near Finse station

Sunday 9th June 2013, 2.30pm (day 654)

Bergen-Oslo railway, 9/6/13

Remember, the rule on the blog is — all photos are taken on the day. So I bet I’ve seen more snow than you today, unless you live in Antarctica or somewhere. This is what Norway looks like, on June 9th, at 1,222m (4,000 feet approx) above sea level, from the train on what must be one of the world’s great rail journeys from Bergen to Oslo. And a bargain at 399 Norwegian kroner: and there aren’t many of those in Norway I can tell you. Particularly in the Voss – Geilo section this is a truly spectacular ride. Do it some day…

View of the Hjeltefjord, from Tjeldstø

Saturday 8th June 2013, 3.05pm (day 653)

Hjeltefjorden, 8/6/13

I have started going to certain places simply because I think there’s a chance that I might get a decent photo. Tjeldstø is a village near the end of a chain of islands that extends into the North Sea to the north-west of Bergen (specifically, it is on the island of Alvøy). For 50km (32 miles) or so, as you drive up route 561 along a chain of bridges, things are much as you see here – rocks, water, sheep. Here’s my best attempt to encapsulate the region in one picture. What is missing are the twenty or so seabirds that were buzzing me at this point. Guys… I wasn’t after your nests, honestly. Just the photo.

Maria-Carme on the Nordnes peninsula

Friday 7th June 2013, 10.25pm (day 652)

Maria Carme, 7/6/13

Maria-Carme is my hostess/contact/employer/friend in Bergen and almost every trip I have made here during the course of this blog has been down to her, so it’s about time she made it onto the site. As you can see, she has a great look, and this photo also deserves to get on when you consider a) the time it was taken and b) the amount of daylight still in the sky. So much light here at this time of year, so much to see.

Sotrabrua

Thursday 6th June 2013, 8.45pm (day 651)

Sotrabrua, 6/6/13

‘Brua’ is Norwegian for ‘bridge’. This bridge connects the mainland with the island of Sotra, near Bergen. We sailed under it today on the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, a large ship which I occupied with about 300 (mostly drunk) Norwegians, an ambiguous way to spend one’s evening, but the views were good.

Æbelø island, Denmark

Wednesday 5th June 2013, 12.35pm (day 650)

Æbelø, 5/6/13

Denmark sneaks itself onto the blog again, courtesy of overflying it then changing planes in Copenhagen, on my way to Norway for a week and a half’s work. I love this, proof that nature can create beauty at so many different scales. It looks like a flower, don’t you think? I also think the single little cloud in the bay is a nice touch.

A couple of minutes’ searching on Google Maps suggests this is the ‘island’ of Æbelø, just north of the city of Odense on the north coast of Fyn (and on that island is also located Nyborg, which has also featured on the blog if you recall). It must be low tide here — I would bet this area looked quite different a few hours later.

Oh yeah, it’s day 650: and every 50 days I update the ‘Best of the Rest’ page. Only two new ones this time — I must be getting pickier. (Or less good at photography.)

Ladder stile, Potter Fell

Tuesday 4th June 2013, 10.35am (day 649)

Ladder stile, 4/6/13

I’m walking again. If you want to know more about that part of the day then see my other blog. It was a gorgeous, glorious summer’s day, perfect weather in every respect, and this is more-or-less the only picture I took all day that didn’t have some blue skies on it somewhere. But nevertheless it’s the one I like the best: good curve on the wall, the solitary X-shape of the stile.

Cat and wall

Monday 3rd June 2013, 9.45am (day 648)

Cat and wall, 3/6/13

Life round here definitely feels chilled at the moment. It’s amazing what a nice, sunny four or five days does to this country, particularly when it’s been about a year since we had any such sustained period of pleasant.

Bluebell meadow

Sunday 2nd June 2013, 3.05pm (day 647)

Bluebell meadow, 2/6/13

I know I did the same theme a couple of days ago but if I’m to truly encapsulate the day then I have to return to it. Went on a walk up to the woods of Hardcastle Crags today, and the bluebells are making a spectacular display this year. They are a signal species, if the bluebells are healthy, the wood’s healthy, so this is a good sight. I think anyone familiar with the English countryside reacts to bluebells at a pretty primal level.
