Norwegian cliche

Wednesday 17th June 2026, 4.50pm (day 5,410)

Trolls, 17/6/26

When I departed from Tromsø airport on the morning of 26th April 2018 I did not know how long it would be before I returned either to that city or the country of Norway. I didn’t think it would be over eight years, though. Having had regular trips there for work, these dried up, just because these things sometimes do. But it’s good to be back in 2026 — and purely for a holiday.

Today’s was a long journey, though, thanks to an enforced 5-hour layover in Gardemoen (Oslo) airport, where one must remind the tourists of a few local cliches here and there. But why make trolls out to be sweet, cuddly, hobbit-like creatures? I’ve seen Troll Hunter.

Bislett Stadium, Oslo

Monday 2nd September 2013, 2.45pm (day 739)

Bislett stadium, 2/9/13

I got pictures of a few Oslo landmarks today but I have chosen this one because, firstly, I sort of stumbled across the place, having taken a wrong turn on my walk back into the city after finishing work at the university (comfortably early, but that’s Norway for you, where they do things early — 11.30 is a typical time for lunch).

Second, this is the scene of something I remember watching at the time, and even then, aged 11, I thought it was quite impressive. With 32 years’ hindsight, what Sebastian Coe did on 10/6/81 must be counted as one of the most astonishing athletic performances of all time, setting a world record for the 800 metres (1:41.73) that was not beaten for 16 years and has still only been bettered twice. Which is quite mind-boggling, when you think about how records tend to fall in that sport. And here’s where it happened.

[Having checked these facts on Wikipedia I feel duty bound to point out that the women’s 800m record was set by Jarmila Kratochvila in 1983, which is, perhaps, even more amazing.]

Watching Norway v Italy, Oslo Gardemoen airport

Tuesday 11th June 2013, 6.30pm (day 656)

Norway v Italy, 11/6/13

Gosh, here I am in an airport, that hasn’t happened much this year has it (sarcasm warning). Sat out a half-hour flight delay at Oslo airport (which doesn’t seem to be particularly near Oslo) by watching others watching Norway v Italy in the UEFA Under-21 championship: final score 1-1, if you’re interested. Slightly strange light on the guys in the middle but I like the shot anyway, it was taken very candidly and quickly so you never quite know how they’re going to turn out.
