Retail heaven (or hell)

Wednesday 23rd December 2015, 2.55pm (day 1,581)

Bullring, 23/12/15

A picture to warm the heart of economists everywhere. Part of me despairs at the scale of it all but I cannot judge because, like everyone in traffic jams, I was just as much part of it as everyone else today. I guess this picture could be most anywhere in the world at this point in the year, but it happens to be Birmingham’s second-ever appearance on this blog (after 19/3/12). This is the Bullring shopping centre, recently totally rebuilt and vast in scale, this is just one wing of it.

Boot and bench (and break)

Tuesday 22nd December 2015, 6.30pm (day 1,580)

My boot, 22/12/15

My boot. The pub bench (illuminated by the yellow of the sodium streetlights and the green of the traffic light just down the road). My Xmas break, 11 days off work now. Hurrah!

Joe blows stuff up

Monday 21st December 2015, noon (day 1,579)

Joe in his room, 21/12/15

Joe has two weeks off school. I think it’s fair enough that he can spend the first weekday of this break lying around on his bed doing what it says on the door. One and a half more days of work for me and then I will gladly join in.

The mallard knows

Sunday 20th December 2015, 12.05pm (day 1,578)

Mallard, 20/12/15

Ducks are always good models, well-coloured and they don’t really mind people sticking cameras in their faces. Mind you, this one was turned the other way until it zipped round and had a dabble in its wing, for cleaning purposes. Looks like it’s sweeping a cape across its face — ‘The Shadow knows?’. Before your time? Before mine, for sure.

Old door

Saturday 19th December 2015, 4.20pm (day 1,577)

Peeling door, 19/12/15

Second of five days in a row where I guarantee I am not going beyond the home — pub — shop axis. Time to dig into some creative corners; I’ve had my eye on this door for a while.

Pub doorstep

Friday 18th December 2015, 5.20pm (day 1,576)

Doorstep, 18/12/15

Friday night in the pub – the world outside passes by, but the working week (a 6-day one for me) is over.

Kim, graduation, 17/12/15

Congratulations to all my students who graduated from the class of 2015 at today’s ceremony — and indeed to all students everywhere, who work bloody hard, you know.

Shoe, St. Peter’s Square

Wednesday 16th December 2015, 9.00am (day 1,574)

Abandoned shoe, 16/12/15

Why? Why are there abandoned shoes in this world, particularly just one of them, and particularly with a heel like this, right in the middle of Manchester city centre on a Wednesday morning? Who knows, but let’s make it number 3 in this occasional series

As good as it gets (for mid-December)

Tuesday 15th December 2015, 4.15pm (day 1,573)

Dusk HB, 15/12/15

Very, very far from being a satisfactory photo but it does sum up a terribly dull, grey and dark day, in which very little happened of note. Thus, the turn of the year etc etc.

Outside Bush House

Monday 14th December 2015, 10.50am (day 1,572)

Bush House, 14/12/15

So many advantages to coming down last night instead of this morning — no 5.30am alarm call, and the chance just to amble through London streets and see what came into view. The monumental Bush House belongs to the London School of Economics, but I was just passing. I love the tableau made by these guys. Is the one on the right missing out?
