Street scene, Oxford Road (wet)

Friday 13th July 2018, 9.40am (day 2,514)

Oxford Rd, wet, 13/7/18

No social commentary intended: I think the cyclist was reporting an incident rather than being accused of one. Anyway I only realised later that I might have been picturing that. The main point of the pic was to show that in Manchester this morning it actually rained, the first substantial downpour for weeks. I have been saying how much we needed this — but it was somewhat irritating that it chose to do this when I was out in it without a brolly. I smelt damp for the rest of the day.

High summer, Rhyl

Thursday 12th July 2018, 4.45pm (day 2,513)

Rhyl, 12/7/18

One can expect many of the small seaside towns of Britain to look fairly desolate on, say, a wet Tuesday in February. But Rhyl, North Wales, where I happened to find myself this evening, manages to look like this in mid-July at the end of the sunniest period in a couple of decades. It’s quite an achievement.

Another Manchester Monday morning

Monday 9th July 2018, 7.15am (day 2,510)

By Urbis, 9/7/18

Since the addition of a 6.32 train service from Hebden to Manchester in the mornings I have been braving the earlier start more often as it is a civilised train with leg room. Hence the recent run of 7:00 – 7:45 shots from the city centre. I like the trilogy of red/orange on this shot. The social implications, less so.

A place to sit

Wednesday 4th July 2018, 11.40am (day 2,505)

Courtyard chair, 4/7/18

We all need something like this. A place to sit and contemplate life, the sunshine and the adjacent building works (well, this is Manchester).

“Bring me the Moon…”

Tuesday 3rd July 2018, 7.25am (day 2,504)

Crane and moon, 3/7/18

“Bring me the Moon”, ordered Gru, cackling as by the force of his will alone he controlled his minions and their new big white contraption.

Tree collage

Saturday 30th June 2018, 11.40am (day 2,501)

Tree collage, 30/6/18

So ends June, probably the warmest, sunniest month to yet feature on this blog, at least in the UK. The Hebden Bridge Arts Festival is underway, which doubtless explains this collage visible on Market Street — it’s the kind of thing that happens. Better than plastic bags hanging from the foliage, anyway.

Waiting for water

Thursday 28th June 2018, 6.55pm (day 2,499)

Waiting for water, 28/6/18

With no running water on our allotment we depend for irrigation there either on rain or on lugging up liquid from the house. The buckets are waiting… but the rain has not come. So the bottles go up the hill, again and again.

More of the same

Wednesday 27th June 2018, 8.40am (day 2,498)

Another sunny morning, 27/6/18

A double meaning in the title of today’s post. The good weather continues, that’s the first thing. But it’s also a time in which I am sticking around familiar places for a good long spell. There has always been a steady drip-feed of new locations on the blog. The only previous sustained period without them was spring 2016, broken when we went to Portugal that summer. Football matches in obscure places have kept up the run of new locations in 2017-18 too. But since the season finished at Poulton on May 19th (the last new location) every shot has been from somewhere familiar and this is going to stay the case until well into August.

Still, in such lovely weather — familiarity definitely does not breed contempt. It’s nice to be here.

Monday morning ain’t so bad

Monday 25th June 2018, 7.45am (day 2,496)

Glorious Monday, 25/6/18

In work before 8am for the second Monday in a row. But, you know, on a morning like today it’s really not so bad. Hottest day of the year so far.

Clare, late (or early)

Saturday 23rd June 2018, 3.05am (day 2,494)

Clare, late night, 23/6/18

Saturday morning…. but still Friday night, in practical terms. Clare makes her way back from the party through the streets of Walthamstow. Two notable things about this picture, if we’re being statistically geeky about it: the first time London has made it onto this blog five days in a row; and the latest ‘true night’ shot, in other words, the end of an evening out, beating the previous record holder by five minutes.
