Stormy sky, Hebden Bridge

Sunday 28th July 2013, 4.45pm (day 703)

HB stormy sky, 28/7/13

Back from the red brick of Crowborough, built on its clay soils, to the light brown stone of Hebden Bridge, built on its millstone grit. But the weather was more or less the same – unsettled, rumbly, turbulent. Not a bad shot but shame about the telephone wire. And the time on the clock is fiction — this is a notoriously inaccurate timepiece.

Poundfield Stores, Crowborough, Sussex

Friday 26th July 2013, 11.10am (day 701)

Poundfield Stores, 26/7/13

Once in a while you will get a photo on here that is posted not for artistic merit (though I don’t mind this shot in that regard, I think it captures the small and prosaic nature of this establishment), but just because it means something to me. This trip to Sussex has been undertaken partly because I wanted to go and have a nose around the places where I lived when I was a child, until 1988 when I left aged about 19, these being the town of Crowborough in Sussex and the nearby village of Rotherfield. I could bore you with how it all felt but there’s not a lot of point, you’ve never been there and it’s not, to tell the truth, the most exciting part of the world although it is a very pretty one.

The reason this photo is here is because of all the places I expected to have disappeared, this was the most unexpected survivor; my old neighbourhood store. Seeing this place and going in to buy sweets (and I did, well, a Bounty Bar anyway) really did make me feel like I was 10 years old again. It’s not called ‘Mace’ any more but long may it last.

Brighton Beach

Wednesday 24th July 2013, 3.45pm (day 699)

Brighton beach, 24/7/13

Ah, the English seaside on a hot summer’s day. Sand? That’s for those continentals, of suspicious morality and lacking in backbone.

Canal contraption

Monday 22nd July 2013, 8.50am (day 697)

Canal contraption, 22/7/13

Too unusual not to use as today’s picture. I believe this contraption was put to use repairing the canal bank here in Hebden Bridge today.

By the way, am I the only one having ‘issues’ with WordPress – I mean, logging on, even making some blogs appear at all?

Sunny summer morning, Nutclough woods

Friday 19th July 2013, 8.55am (day 694)

Nutclough woods, 19/7/13

9th of the last 10 days spent in Hebden Bridge. When the weather is as beautiful as this however, it doesn’t matter. This is one of my neighbours: spiritualists may read in what they will to the captured aura here, but I do note the picture was taken right into the sun.

Evening sun, outside the underdwellings

Wednesday 17th July 2013, 7.10pm (day 692)

Outside underdwellings, 17/7/13

The steep topography of Hebden Bridge means that many of the houses are built on top of other houses. Ours is an example: there is a whole two-storey cottage underneath our three floors, the entrance to it being behind the red box in this photo. This is the side of the terrace which catches the evening light, and the days remain beautiful and sunny here.

Wildly inaccurate sundial

Tuesday 16th July 2013, 7.00pm (honestly) (day 691)

Inaccurate sundial, 16/7/13

What can I say? This is just a badly designed timepiece, even allowing for Daylight Savings Time. I swear I passed this one at 7pm. Officer.

Graduation balloons

Monday 15th July 2013, 10.10am (day 690)

Graduation, 15/7/13

Congratulations to the summer graduates of the UoM, who certainly had fair weather to mark their achievement, although I was not present at this (or any) ceremony this year. Most of my students graduate in December. The shot also gets in because of the mild comedy value, you see what I mean, I’m sure. Or maybe it’s the Watchmen reference. I love Watchmen.

Another corner of Hebden Bridge

Saturday 13th July 2013, 6.50pm (day 688)

Alleyway, 13/7/13

I’m still here. Today you were getting either the ‘fruity produce from the garden, ripe and ready to pick’ one (done two days ago) or the ‘mundane corner of HB in nice summer sunlight’ one (done last Saturday). Er…. let’s do the latter.

Bottom of School Street

Wednesday 10th July 2013, 4.10pm (day 685)

Bottom of School Street, 10/7/13

Stayed at home almost all day writing, and it wasn’t even a sunny day, so no real light. Here’s a study of form and composition from my locality that I’ve not yet covered, however. The School in question is Stubbings, the steps go up to its lower entrance. (Not a contradiction in terms – that’s Hebden Bridge for you.) I make this the first post box to appear on the blog, though I might be wrong.
