The Powell-Mason cable car

Monday 30th March 2015, 9.55am (day 1,313)

Cable car trio, 30/3/15

Definitely don’t think I did San Francisco justice with yesterday’s shot — must have been the jet lag. This is much better. I apologise to the good people of the East Bay — Oakland and Berkeley — where I spent most of the day, but I have to go with this shot today. Could they have posed any better if they’d meant it? And love the cable cars too, one of those beautiful anachronisms that civic activism has preserved, and the world’s a better place for it.

Solveig has a think

Thursday 19th March 2015, 2.45pm (day 1,302)

Solveig thinks, 19/3/15

The reason I was at the airport yesterday was that I was once again travelling to Norway, I make this my 21st trip there since I first came in September 2010. The occasion was the final seminar and workshop for the project I’ve been working on since summer 2013, a nice but also poignant moment because right now I don’t know for sure that I’ll be back. In this picture participant (and friend) Solveig thinks about her next move. She’s the one always trying to talk to me in Norwegian, she’s very patient, which probably comes of originally being from Tromsø in northern Norway, which gets no sun for two months each winter.

Escaping from Atlantis

Saturday 14th March 2015, 7.55pm (day 1,297)

Atlantis, 14/3/15

It’s a board game, quite a good one in fact. Not an exciting weekend thus far but it doesn’t matter. I won, so hey, I rule.

Tram stop, 13/3/15

So what’s in the carrying case? Inquiring minds want to know.

Tom at the station

Monday 9th March 2015, 7.55am (day 1,292)

Tom at station, 9/3/15

Taking shots in tolerably good morning light to pass the time waiting for my train in to Manchester, it was only later, after uploading, that I realised this chap ambling down the platform was my next-door neighbour Tom (who also works at the university). And so starts another week for both of us. But the mornings are getting lighter and this is never a bad time of year.

Accordianist

Wednesday 4th March 2015, 3.35pm (day 1,287)

Accordionist, 4/3/15

There he was, playing the theme from The Godfather. And happy with it. I make this only the second busker to appear on the blog.

Perhaps I could have got a photo to mark Joe’s birthday, 12 years old today. Never mind, let’s mark it anyway.

Liz and her roulade

Wednesday 18th February 2015, 1.30pm (day 1,273)

Liz and roulade, 18/2/15

First day of a welcome five-day break from work. As a gift bought last year (months ago, in fact), Clare booked me on a baking course today run by the very impressive set up at Slattery’s in north Manchester (actually Bury). Got up very early, put in as hard a day’s work as I have in a long time, and came out of it with a lot of very nice cakes and ideas about how to repeat this production process. I tried to document it on camera as well without getting too much in the way or distracted from my own labours. Here Liz, one of my four fellow students, gets her roulade base out of the oven, to soon be filled with strawberries and cream. Yum.

Steve and some shot glasses

Sunday 15th February 2015, 5.15pm (day 1,270)

Steve and shots, 15/2/15

He’ll probably shoot me for making this Photo of the Day but then again he did invite me to take it. Mr. Steve Grey enjoys his Sunday afternoon in the pub, as indeed we all did.

Thursday market

Thursday 12th February 2015, 12.20pm (day 1,267)

Market stall, 12/2/15

What was in the boxes I do not know, but if they started out full then clearly she’s had a good day’s trading. Perhaps that’s what she’s texting about. But perhaps the stall just sells the boxes. It’s that kind of market.

Chris working in the library

Thursday 5th February 2015, 5.05pm (day 1,260)

Chris in library, 5/2/15

No frolicking in the snow today — too much work to do. This time in Bergen I have been accompanied by a colleague from Manchester, Chris, and here he is enjoying the beanbags of this 21st century workspace: the building that, in the end, our project here in Norway has all been about. So let’s use it…
