Remnants of the Boy

Saturday 11th June 2022, 2.25pm (day 3,943)

Clare was clearing out a drawer this afternoon, one of those corners in which obscure things gather, to re-emerge after many years. Like this small red pouch which, it turned out, contained this collection of Joe’s baby teeth — the tooth fairy came, and transferred her bounty to this place, it seems. It serves to purpose to keep them, but I totally understand why they’ve not been disposed of.

Blue glass portrait

Thursday 21st April 2022, 5.10pm (day 3,892)

Clare in blue glass, 21/4/22

From Luddenden — setting for yesterday’s blue-sky picture — to London, which is rather bigger, but in which the weather continues to be very pleasant. The blues seen here come partly from the sky but also this glass, which was a vivid blue and caught the eye. Clare gets on, at least in part, for the second time in three days and soon will be surpassing Joe in terms of the number of blog appearances overall.

Self-portrait in red shirt (honestly)

Tuesday 29th March 2022, 9.30am (day 3,869)

Drew 'red shirt' selfie, 29/3/22

At some yet-to-be-defined point in the future, there will come a day when not only do I have nothing in particular to photograph, but I also don’t manage to take a usable photo of nothing in particular. Today came close, I have to say. I therefore feel it necessary to fall back on this selfie taken in the morning, for no particular reason. I did think of calling it ‘selfie in red shirt’ but then I went monochrome so even that is somewhat indulgent. At least you can check on how I’ve been aging recently. Clare thinks I appear ‘terribly serious’ here but I guess that’s just what I look like at the moment.

Self-portrait in grubby car

Wednesday 19th January 2022, 2.55pm (day 3,800)

Self portrait, grubby car, 19/1/22

Just one of those images noticed on the way down to town. It certainly is a very grubby car, but at least this records someone else’s artwork, before it gets cleaned off. A photowhack (the only photo taken today), and also a picture taken, totally inadvertently, at exactly the same time as yesterday’s (within a minute). This is the kind of trivia I seem to care about the most these days — see the updated stats page too, as it’s a round number day today.

Family selfie

Thursday 30th December 2021, 1.50pm (day 3,780)

Family selfie, 30/12/21

Let’s push that Christmas theme a little further. There we are to top right, and I think this is the first time all three of us have appeared on the same featured shot. Here we await a lunch out, that was terrible and overpriced, so I will forebear from mentioning the name of the pub.

Joe is back

Wednesday 22nd December 2021, 3.25pm (day 3,772)

Joe in Railway, 22/12/21

Including this shot Joe has appeared on 142 days of this blog, an average of about once every 26.5 days, and the most depicted person on here. But this is his first shot since 9th September, a date located just before he went off to university. However, here he is back from said posting. Different? Perhaps, a little.

Birthday person

Tuesday 26th October 2021, 1.10pm (day 3,715)

Clare on birthday, 26/10/21

As this blog cycles (seemingly endlessly) around the calendar there are certain fixed points, and 26th October is one of them — Clare’s birthday. Here she is celebrating it with lunch in the White Lion — her parents, my in-laws, unseen to the left. Happy happies to her: I shall demur from reporting the exact number, but it’s several years fewer than me, anyway.

Joe — the last supper?

Thursday 9th September 2021, 7.10pm (day 3,668)

Joe, last supper, 9/9/21

The beginning of what will probably be a trilogy of pictures. On Saturday Joe leaves home — at least for university, in Dundee. We took him out for dinner tonight, not very far away (hence this also becomes the 1,500th Hebden Bridge picture to feature on the blog). Of course I sincerely hope this will not be his ‘last supper’. But whether he will ever live here again in the truly permanent sense that he has for the last 18 years, five months and five days (he has never lived in any other house than he does now) — who knows… But that’s the thing about the future, isn’t it? Who knows?

52nd birthday selfie (with shaving cut)

Thursday 26th August 2021, 10.30am (day 3,654)

Selfie with shaving cut, 26/8/21

Here’s how I begin this 11th year of blogging, my 53rd of life. In monochrome and with a shaving cut. It’s been a good birthday.

This is the eleventh time that 26th August has cycled round on this blog. Including today, the last four, photographically anyway, have been spent in Hebden Bridge, with 26/8/17 (in Urbana, Illinois) the last time I spent my birthday away from home. This is also the 50th self-portrait of some kind or another to feature on here.

Evening on Hastings beach

Saturday 21st August 2021, 7.25pm (day 3,649)

Hastings evening, 21/8/21

Clare and (for the third time in four days) Joe amble along the rim of the country. To the left, nothing until Dieppe in France. To the right, the town of Hastings, home for the next few nights. The evenings draw in, but summer remains with us.
