Catherine at work

Friday 21st August 2020, 10.40am (day 3,284)

Cath the bath, 21/8/20

A reason we went away this week in particular was that our bathroom was being redecorated so it was advisable to be out of the house.  This job was ably undertaken by Catherine, pictured here in the process of grouting our newly tiled floor, and her assistant Simon.  All is now back in use and looking much better, so thanks (and money) are due to them both.

A joke? Maybe, maybe not

Saturday 15th August 2020, 1.10pm (day 3,278)

Possible irony, 15/8/20

There were several other photos that could have made it today and they were all more artistic than this one.  But I have gone with this one simply to provoke some consideration.  Is this sign a joke?  Or is it meant seriously?  What’s more to the point is that right now it’s actually impossible to be sure, and that alone is a sign of how screwed up things have become.  I will continue to document the world that I see, but it doesn’t mean that I understand it any more.

Poetry and plant

Tuesday 11th August 2020, 1.25pm (day 3,274)

Poetry, 11/8/20

The second day in a row with an explicitly circular theme.  The scene appeared during my first use of C’s treatment room as a work venue for a few weeks, in which time some changes have indiscernibly happened among the decorations and words to ponder.

Blackberries and cream

Monday 10th August 2020, 7.15pm (day 3,273)

Blackberries and cream, 10/8/20

Ahhh. Rubus plicatus, one of the countryside’s great free bounties.  They have found evidence in the stomachs of prehistoric peat bog victims that we’ve been eating these beauties for thousands of years.  Who am I to go against such tradition.

The breakfast room

Wednesday 29th July 2020, 8.35am (day 3,261)

Breakfast room, Brook House, 29/7/20

The sun deigned to make a brief appearance this morning, shining on the chairs of the breakfast room at our hotel. Though it was the last chance to see it on our trip to Eskdale, as we were back in Hebden by lunchtime. But even if the weather has been somewhat dubious, how good was it to have got away for a while.

In the opticians

Saturday 18th July 2020, 8.55am (day 3,250)

In opticians', 18/7/20

I desperately need a new pair of glasses.  This is because my current pair are six years old and apparently in that time my eyes have improved.  If this sounds paradoxical, clearly you are not over forty years old.  Maybe I’ll take the pink pair.

A good book

Wednesday 15th July 2020, 7.05pm (day 3,247)

Kes, 15/7/20

Started my time off with as low key a day as could be managed, even by recent standards.  Felt like picking up a good book, which this is, very much so: even if not a very long one. If you’ve never read this, you really should.  Pictured also in the foreground, the reading glasses that I now need to make sense of it.

Running near empty

Monday 13th July 2020, 12.55pm (day 3,245)

Biro, 13/7/20

From Wednesday this week I am off work for the rest of the month.  But until that day is reached, I am like this pen.  Just about still functioning but there’s very little left in the tank.

21 years on…

Thursday 2nd July 2020, 6.25pm (day 3,234)

Wedding pic, 2/7/20

21 years ago today I did not walk down the aisle with Clare, because we didn’t get married in a church: instead the venue for our wedding was the Ashton Memorial in Lancaster. Either way… happy anniversary.

Shelves for CDs, and other things

Sunday 28th June 2020, 12.55pm (day 3,230)

CD shelves, 28/6/20

It is getting difficult to sustain the (my, your) interest over the endless, repeated days of lockdown. Particularly when they are cold, grey and wet, like today. I sorted out and dusted the CD shelves: this is as exciting as it got. The extra decorations have always been there.
