Self-portrait in Tim Horton’s window

Friday 7th June 2024, 9.40am (day 4,670)

Toronto selfie, 7/6/24

It’s been a few months since I did a self-portrait, and the prospect of this one did occur to me while sat having a pre-meeting cup of tea in Tim Hortons, pondering how we can find ways to continue the collaboration that has brought me here three times now. I am here sat in more or less the same spot from which I took this shot in October 2021, and armed with the knowledge of the venue, the building in the background and Google Maps you can probably pinpoint the exact location should you wish to.

Squash

Tuesday 19th March 2024, 11.00am (day 4,590)

Squashed Minnie, 19/3/24

I assume the visual pun is deliberate. Is that Minnie Mouse, or her male counterpart? I think Minnie. Either way, the first mouse to appear on here in 12+ years…. kinda. Taken through the window of one or other of Hebden Bridge’s innumerable cafés, I forget which one this is exactly. Perhaps it would have been nice to have not had the reflections, but it is what it is.

In Nightjar’s window

Friday 11th August 2023, 4.05pm (day 4,369)

Nightjar window, 11/8/23

He was inside Nightjar. I was outside, enjoying the first beer of the weekend (and also wondering whether it was about to rain). I didn’t mean to get myself into the shot as a reflection, but once I saw that I had, I decided it might be saying something about me seeing into the future…. if you get the point.

It did rain, by the way. But only a little.

Evening on Napoleon Street

Tuesday 30th November 2021, 6.30pm (day 3,750)

On Napoleon Street, 30/11/21

I seem to have made it to the last day in St Helena without a Napoleon reference — so here’s one, a vague one anyway. Not that this shot has anything to do with the man himself, for whom, having heard the stories of his time here, I now feel a little sorry. Anyway: there will be more to come of this place. But it’s time to head home.

The watcher

Sunday 16th May 2021, 1.15pm (day 3,552)

Watching cat, 16/5/21

Not a day that will live long in the annals of photographic history, at least, not for me. But this cat was cute (despite the reflections) and in fact, this is the first cat to appear on the blog since 3rd March 2020 — which is pretty poor form for this self-declared ‘cat person’. Lots of dogs, lots of birds, even a pig or three, but no cats for a while. Let’s rectify this.

Reflections of a limited existence

Tuesday 19th January 2021, 7.00pm (day 3,435)

Books in window, 20/1/21

The world is still out there, somewhere…. so we’ve been told. Across the valley, there’s a house that doesn’t seem to have removed its Christmas lights yet. Meanwhile, at home, the movie collection keeps a semblance of entertainment ticking over.

Red, white and blue

Friday 14th September 2018, 5.35pm (day 2,577)

Red, white, blue, 14/9/18

Second photo in a row taken through glass: this lady was sat outside the pub as we enjoyed the usual Friday afternoon thing. A quiet weekend coming up, poor weather forecast although there was some sunshine coming in for this shot. A bit of oddness caused by the reflections but I still like the image.

First one in

Monday 27th November 2017, 6.40am (day 2,286)

Early shop window, 27/11/17

Second Monday morning in a row where I have to haul myself up before dawn and onto the 06:59 train. Not my favoured way to start the week. I certainly felt like the first person up in town this morning; though I guess this suggests that either the proprietor of ‘Brocante’ beat me to it, or they just left the lights on all night.

Window, Hebden Bridge Mill

Monday 3rd April 2017, 8.45am (day 2,048)

Mill window, 3/4/17

Definitely one of those days where I was glad there was some half-decent light on my brief foray out of the house this morning, as once I got back at about 9.30 I then stayed in all day teaching online. This window is a feature of the large mill that sits in Hebden Bridge town centre and is known — without much originality — as Hebden Bridge Mill. The new year’s foliage is just coming to bud. I seem to be having a run of square pictures at the moment; that’s two in a row, and three in the last week.

Directive

Monday 11th April 2016, 3.55pm (day 1,691)

No hippies sign, 11/4/16

I assume this is all postmodern and ironic. Then again, perhaps it is post-postmodern and they actually mean it.
