Humph the Hebden Heron

Wednesday 25th May 2016, 8.25am (day 1,735)

Humph the heron, 25/5/16

On a grey day spent entirely working at home it’s always helpful for the photography when one of the local herons turns up in the Hebden Water just below my house. They are not particularly willing models — this one saw me a few seconds after I got this shot and flew off — perhaps that explains why it looks a bit rueful here, its neck tucked in, shoulders hunched. That’s why I’m calling it “Humph”, I can imagine that coming out of its mouth in a speech bubble.

Out for a walk, Central London

Saturday 30th April 2016, 12.15pm (day 1,710)

Goose in London, 30/4/16

This was an urban animal if ever I’ve seen one, striding out wholly purposefully this lunchtime along a busy street. I know the composition of this shot could be better — getting rid of the post behind the goose would have improved it for a start — but some shots you only really get one chance to capture.

Angry bird

Wednesday 20th April 2016, 9.25am (day 1,700)

Mean bird, 20/4/16

“I ain’t no jackdaw. I ain’t got no stoopid hair in my beak. Want this bread? Come and get it, asshole.”

The rook doesn’t quite pull it off

Friday 15th April 2016, 7.50am (day 1,695)

Rook and hair, 15/4/16

This rook was looking quite butch in the viewfinder but he rather spoils it with the hair poking out of his beak. No, it’s not on my camera lens, or on your computer screen — it is indeed poking out of his beak.

ERRATUM: Apparently this is a jackdaw, not a rook — my mistake….

Robin Redbreast

Sunday 13th March 2016, 11.55am (day 1,662)

Robin, 13/3/16

Anybody who lives anywhere near me will know that we enjoyed a perfect spring day today — the sort where all of nature comes out to frolic. Look at the glint in this robin’s eye.

Seagulls at MediaCityUK

Tuesday 23rd February 2016, 12.05pm (day 1,643)

Seagulls, Media City, 23/2/16

MediaCityUK is something like the biggest TV production facility in the UK, or is it Europe, and the biggest property development in the North-West of England, or is it the whole of the UK. Either way, during my visit there today I decided the best photo I got was this one of the local wildlife.

Heron, Hebden Water

Wednesday 17th February 2016, 9.45am (day 1,637)

Heron, 17/2/16

It could be sharper and it ain’t gonna win any wildlife photography contests, but I’m glad this baby was fishing in the river this morning when I went shopping down in the town, because otherwise I was home all day working and there was nothing to see…. But herons are always good for a shot. Handsome creatures. That neck-spring-and-dagger-beak combination must be a fish’s worst nightmare.

The mallard knows

Sunday 20th December 2015, 12.05pm (day 1,578)

Mallard, 20/12/15

Ducks are always good models, well-coloured and they don’t really mind people sticking cameras in their faces. Mind you, this one was turned the other way until it zipped round and had a dabble in its wing, for cleaning purposes. Looks like it’s sweeping a cape across its face — ‘The Shadow knows?’. Before your time? Before mine, for sure.

Pigeons on the Old Bridge

Wednesday 11th November 2015, 11.05am (day 1,539)

Pigeons on bridge, 11/11/15

I feel these guys are lining up, ready to attack me a la Hitchcock. But they posed well enough for a photo this morning.

Muscovy duck, cleaning

Sunday 8th November 2015, 2.50pm (day 1,536)

Duck cleaning, 8/11/15

I am sure the Muscovy duck gets as much pleasure from a good solid self-probing like this as we do a good shower. I know this picture could be sharper but this was a long zoom on a very gloomy day. A decent, stress-free weekend, but not at all a sunny one: we are heading for deepest November, the dullest period of the whole year.
