Mural, Cowdenbeath

Saturday 6th May 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,272)

Cowdenbeath mural, 6/5/23

Cowdenbeath, a little town in Fife, offered various entertainments as an excuse to break today’s journey up to Dundee. One that was unanticipated before I got there was a series of really excellent, and huge, murals that decorate the town centre. This one is remarkably good. Look at the sense of focus, and hence realism, that the artist has achieved. Those trucks look absolutely solid. Would that I could get things in focus like that, sometimes.

The commute down the study wall

Tuesday 11th April 2023, 11.35am (day 4,247)

Louse on study wall, 11/4/23

I wonder how many organisms inhabit this house along with the two of us. None on an open basis — that is, no pets — but the cave spiders have long been part of the family, and then there are the more occasional sightings of tenants. This louse made a point of crawling down the study wall from somewhere behind the shelves at the top, and disappearing behind the radiator at the bottom. This may have been a one-off journey but for all I know it’s a regular commute.

The mysterious door on Foster Lane

Thursday 24th November 2022, 12.50pm (day 4,109)

Mysterious door, 24/11/22

I’ve lived within a few yards of this door for twenty-one years and have absolutely no idea what is behind it. It seems to simply go into nothing: on the other side, so far as one can tell, there is merely a large clump of undergrowth. I genuinely feel that this might be a portal into another dimension. Or perhaps a secret MI6 rendition chamber. (But probably it’s just an old coal cellar.)

Evening sunshine, Bury

Wednesday 31st August 2022, 7.00pm (day 4,024)

Above Bury, 31/8/22

August ends with a glorious evening. I certainy haven’t been among those who have complained about the weather this summer: bring it on, I say. In the distance, the northern bits of the town of Bury. Why there? It was just where the feet took me.

Steam cleaning, MOT

Thursday 9th June 2022, 11.50am (day 3,941)

In Batley, 9/6/22

If this garage did ever offer the services suggested here, it doesn’t do so any more. This abandoned lot sits near Batley rail station, a town making its debut on the blog today, albeit unglamorously. The nob graffito is the final touch.

On the wall

Monday 28th March 2022, 10.30am (day 3,868)

Blackbird on wall, 28/3/22

Less sunny that it has been, so the light wasn’t great today and I made only brief forays out of the house. At least, on this, one of the very few pictures I tried today, I got the focus right.

The Leeds-Liverpool canal, at Burnley

Saturday 12th March 2022, 1.00pm (day 3,852)

One wouldn’t think Burnley would be on a direct route from Leeds to Liverpool but the canal bearing that name does take a rather roundabout course. It’s a pastoral spot in a town that doesn’t have a reputation for rural charm. The rule of thirds works well enough on this shot.

Out and about early

Thursday 10th March 2022, 8.50am (day 3,850)

Ladybird on wall, 10/3/22

It’s early in the year to see one of these outside, but here one is, scaling what to it is a substantial crag: actually it’s the capstone of a wall next to a car park. We’re both out and about fairly early, in different ways.

Back to work

Tuesday 31st August 2021, 10.35am (day 3,659)

White Lion wall work, 31/8/21

This is a very boring photo. In that respect it epitomises my day perfectly. The title of the post says it all.

Back of/at the Railway

Thursday 24th June 2021, 2.25pm (day 3,591)

Back of Railway, 24/6/21

The Railway pub has featured very regularly on here down the years, but it’s had its long bouts of closure in the last decade; two flood-related and last year’s thanks to the Great Fear, with it not even reopening during the relatively Fear-free summer of 2020. And because of that, I drifted away…. until this afternoon, anyway. There was still not much happening on the picnic tables now set up round the back, but it’s an excuse to present a study of shapes and colours, at least.
