Manchester’s Digital Twin

Monday 27th October 2025, 9.20am (day 5,177)

Data Visualisation lab, 27/10/25

Wherever it actually resides depends on the university’s deployment of ‘cloud storage solutions’, I guess, but the interface that allows oversight of this ‘digital twin’ of Manchester resides in the Business School. Want to keep an eye on the city’s start-ups? energy use? property prices? infection rates? It’s all here. There’s something mildly sinister and undeniably impressive about it all, both at the same time.

The courtyard

Tuesday 21st October 2025, 12 noon (day 5,171)

EWB courtyard, 21/10/25

The courtyard within it continues to be the only truly nice thing about the Ellen Wilkinson Building, my place of work for the last 20 years and, more or less, three months. Will I miss it when I finally do manage to leave? Probably not. But it can look nice, at different times of the year.

Campus spider

Tuesday 7th October 2025, 9.10am (day 5,157)

Campus spider, 7/10/25

In actuality I will estimate this creature’s body to have been about the size of my thumbnail, so you see it here at around three times life size. Impressive web work, particularly as this resides not in some hidden cranny but beside the A34 in Manchester, on the side of the annex to the Engineering Building (sorry, the Dame Nancy Rothwell Building [B]). Spiders have been around for more than 200 million years, and, I am sure, are among the many species which will outlive us, however things pan out in a future time that I will not see.

Bikes and people

Thursday 2nd October 2025, 3.45pm (day 5,152)

Busy Oxford Road, 2/10/25

It seems to have happened slightly later than usual this year, though that’s just a quirk of the calendar, but today was the day I could no longer avoid going onto campus and being faced by a large number of people who were not in the vicinity two weeks ago. Yes, it’s the first week of teaching. So be it.

The meeting breaks for lunch

Wednesday 3rd September 2025, 1.20pm (day 5,123)

Meeting break, 3/9/25

There is still just under a month to go until I start teaching the latest intake, but plenty needs doing to be ready for that day. Hence the length of the morning meeting. I skulk around, visible as a shadow in the mirror, while my colleagues emerge in the direction of lunch.

On campus, Friday morning

Friday 15th August 2025, 9.45am (day 5,104)

On campus portrait, 15/8/25

Going on the visual and auditory evidence on this Friday in August, and the occupancy rates of nearby car parks, I might have been the only person to actually be present for work in the Ellen Wilkinson Building today. It was certainly a quiet one, anyway. I like the patterns on this shot, and a general feeling of monochrome calm.

More graduations

Wednesday 16th July 2025, 10.00am (day 5,074)

MIE graduation, 16/7/25

Five days after Joe’s version, I get to attend another graduation ceremony, only this time in professional rather than parental capacity, so I was sat up at the front. But it felt more like the back, and quite comfortably at the back, so I could get away with some photography. I am pleased with this shot: it was what I intended when the shutter was pressed.

Keela’s rig

Thursday 26th June 2025, 11.00am (day 5,054)

Keela and VR rig, 26/6/25

It’s nice when my students can still impress me, and, currently, Keela’s dissertation project is certainly doing that — although I can’t tell you what it is, not for any sinister reasons but just because it’s not finished yet and not my business to tell you. But, yes, it involves virtual reality, she doesn’t wear a rig on a regular basis. I do not believe my office noticeboard has featured before so there you go, a chance to check out the randomly accumulated display of items upon it for the first, and who knows, perhaps the last time.

Wet day in the office

Tuesday 27th May 2025, 11.55am (day 5,024)

Corridor umbrella, 27/5/25

You could say there’s been a change in the weather over the last couple of days. I managed to get to and from campus without getting wet but others were not so fortunate, including Susan in the next-door office, it seems.

Campus selfie

Thursday 22nd May 2025, 1.45pm (day 5,019)

First shot from Manchester since the 6th. Do I really spend so little time there these days? At some yet-to-be-determined date in the future, I will, of course, take my last ever shot from there, not so much the city but from campus more specifically. I will not be working at uni for the rest of my life unless that life ends unexpectedly, and fairly soon. But for now I am still going in. I do not know what this sculpture represents though it has clearly been built from the same stuff, and at the same time, as the building that surrounds the courtyard in which it stands. If I have a favourite place on campus, this is probably it.
