On watch

Sunday 9th March 2025, 2.05pm (day 4,945)

Dog and feet, 9/3/25

The weather was no worse today, and perhaps I should have made more of this, but I had done a few miles yesterday and there seemed little need to go any further than the pub, with the outside tables filling up for the first time this year. Long may the sunshine last — which of course it won’t, in Britain it never does. This couple stayed for only a short time, so presumably were being more active.

Ring o’ Bells and Halifax Minster

Tuesday 4th March 2025, 6.10pm (confirmed…) (day 4,940)

Ring o'Bells, 4/3/25

The association between this pub and Halifax Minster is obvious, even before noticing the painting hanging inside, which depicts the choir ‘practising’ while swilling ale in the tavern; and it was painted in the 1790s, apparently. The beer inside is still decent but there wasn’t much singing going on tonight. This is one of the shots where you can check my timekeeping.

Pub Pinocchio

Wednesday 26th February 2025, 5.30pm (day 4,934)

Pub Pinocchio, 26/2/25

Pinocchio joined us in the Railway this afternoon courtesy of Toby, the Gepetto in this particular relationship. Toby makes things, it’s what he does, and he’s pretty good at it too. But even he declared this particular creation to be ‘a bit creepy’. Perhaps all puppets are, to some extent.

Friday evening crew

Friday 7th February 2025, 5.45pm (day 4,915)

Now I’m at home, the risk is run of having nothing particularly interesting or different to photograph — and that was certainly the case today. With apologies to my friends gathered around the fire for the usual Friday evening transition, who are of course interesting (most of the time) but maybe not all that different, at least, not to me.

The Standard guys

Thursday 16th January 2025, 3.20pm (day 4,893)

In the Standard, 16/1/25

I’ve been here before — not just in life, but on the blog, with this picture, taken on my first trip to St Helena. That one is also in black-and-white, and today that aesthetic move relieves some of the more garish colouring, particularly of the Hawaiian shirt of the guy on the left. Who, by the way, keeps saying hello to me as if he’s never met me before, whereas in the past we’ve had numerous conversations. But perhaps I am just forgettable, in a way that he is not.

The Tite & Locke bar, Lancaster station

Saturday 14th December 2024, 1.10pm (day 4,860)

Lancaster station bar, 14/12/24

Oh dear, I’m in a pub again, and at lunchtime too. However, the Tite & Locke bar is newly opened, on platform 3 of Lancaster station, a place I pass through reasonably often, and usually with Clare, who is not averse herself to the occasional beer. I think I will be coming back here: it certainly made a good first impression (unpaid advertisement).

Sister and brother-in-law

Sunday 8th December 2024, 2.25pm (day 4,854)

Vicki and Pete, 8/12/24

A visit from Vicki and Pete, and as I get inexorably older, days like this are increasingly welcome. I think the relatives are happy about it too, despite how Pete may look on this shot.

Getting the fire going

Monday 25th November 2024, 4.15pm (day 4,841)

Stoking the fire, 25/11/24

It’s gone from ‘cold and crisp’ to ‘chilly and damp’ so there’s still a need to get the fire going. Indeed this task is not just the responsibility, but the active duty, of those who drink in the Railway during the early shift.

Stan the stickerer

Friday 22nd November 2024, 5.45pm (day 4,838)

Stan the Stickerer, 22/11/24

You might not be able to tell this from the photos posted but, work-wise, it’s been a very busy week. Time to let off some steam on the Friday evening. Of course, because we are all middle-aged these days, these high jinks amounted to little more than Stan surreptitiously stickering the back of Mark’s hat, but that is about our level these days.

High score (withdrawal)

Wednesday 6th November 2024, 5.25pm (day 4,822)

There are plenty of reasons today to withdraw from active engagement with the world, and offer up a shit photo that highlights a slightly pleasing aspect of the day (29 million is a pretty good score on this machine). And, so, I do.
