My students at the National Football Museum

Friday 3rd March 2017, 11.10am (day 2,017)

NFM field trip, 3/3/17

I do say that on this blog no pictures are staged or posed, and this is the case — I do not arrange any photos specifically to be a blog post, I just take pictures of what’s happening around me at any given time. This is perhaps on the borderline of acceptability then but I did take this photo anyway, for other purposes, and it was the one that I liked best today. My Educational Technology and Communication students on their annual field trip to the National Football Museum in Manchester, with replicas of the Premier League and FA Cup trophies.

Before I die I want to…

Thursday 2nd March 2017, 4.35pm (day 2,016)

Before I die, 2/3/17

An ‘installation’, I guess you’d call this, on campus at the moment…. Probably a huge amount of sociological analysis to be done here.

And how would I answer this question? Well, my bucket list is actually getting a few things ticked off it this year, if all works out (e.g. Japan, midnight sun, eclipse), so maybe I should think of some new ones. Or be all Zen about it, accept that my life could end at any time, and just take what’s coming — while continuing to faithfully record it of course.

Market stalls

Wednesday 1st March 2017, 4.45pm (day 2,015)

Market stalls, 1/3/17

March 2017 is scheduled to be an eventful month for me: by the time it ends I will have gone to both Japan and the Arctic (north Norway), so there’ll hopefully be plenty of photographic inspiration. It didn’t start eventfully however — a quiet day working at home. The market in Hebden Bridge runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, here the stalls have been cleared but remain up in readiness for tomorrow. Plenty of good lines on this shot — which may or may not be perpendicular to each other.

Feeding time

Tuesday 28th February 2017, 3.35pm (day 2,014)

Feeding time, 28/2/17

Whatever it is he is offering, there seems a general indifference to it among the bird population of Hebden Bridge town centre.

Waiting room, early train

Monday 27th February 2017, 6.55am (day 2,013)

Early waiting room, 27/2/17

I don’t make a habit of getting the 06:59 service from Hebden Bridge to Manchester — a two-carriage cattle truck most days. But when I’ve a 9am meeting that can’t be missed, it’s the safest choice. At least it is getting light at that time now. Don’t normally frequent the waiting room either, but it was raining outside today. Welcome to Monday.

Brighton Pier

Sunday 26th February 2017, 12 noon (day 2,012)

Brighton pier, 26/2/17

To conclude a very good weekend in Brighton…. The half-marathon is finishing off behind me (with the wife due in at any moment) but I have pictured that before, so here is a different scene, one of the city’s most famous buildings, crowned by soaring seagulls, which seems appropriate….

We are top of the league

Saturday 25th February 2017, 6.45pm (day 2,011)

Jamie Murphy has just scored the second goal for Brighton & Hove Albion against Reading at the Amex stadium, and you could say we’re all rather happy about it. 3-0 final score — bring on Newcastle…

Russell Square, Brighton

Friday 24th February 2017, 5.05pm (day 2,010)

Russell Square, 24/2/17

Here we are in Brighton — big football match to go to tomorrow and, oh yeah, Clare’s annual jog up and down the sea front in the Brighton half marathon. Nice to get down to the south coast before the sun went down today. Here’s to a good weekend…. the anticipation of which is somehow epitomised in this photo for me.

Grim day (Storm Doris)

Thursday 23rd February 2017, 11.45am (day 2,009)

Storm Doris, 23/2/17

As of a couple of years ago our Meteorological Office started naming our winter storms in accordance with the convention for hurricanes, cyclones etc. — it’s more media-friendly, you can tweet about #StormDoris which is the one which apparently hit the UK today. I don’t personally know anyone called Doris, but I have gone off the name after today — however, we could of course have Storm Drew at this time next year.

Peter films me

Wednesday 22nd February 2017, 1.30pm (day 2,008)

Peter filming, 22/2/17

Our multimedia guy, Peter, gets himself set up ready to film me talking about something or other in my office. I had to sound reasonably intelligent but really, it’s not going to make your day more interesting if you knew what the subject matter had been.
