Are the babies of all species innately cute? Is this just something nature does? Well, OK, not flies, maybe, but the rule seems to hold for most birds and mammals at least. These goslings were being closely watched by Mum on the canal at Mytholmroyd this afternoon.
I’m aware this photo could have been taken anywhere, but it happens to be in Zagreb, Croatia: making this the first place to begin with Z that has appeared on the blog in its 2,454 days.
The pigeons of Zagreb, at least, the ones pictured here, may have decided for many reasons to have a fight but amongst those may have been the fact that on this late morning it was absolutely throwing it down with rain, as is visible here (and it’s not always easy to see rain on photographs unless it’s very heavy). I have been here 24 hours now and there’s certainly been copious amounts of moisture pouring out of the sky. I think there are three birds visible on this shot, but I must admit I’m not entirely sure.
Didn’t a creature looking like this once erupt out of John Hurt’s stomach? The end may be nigh.
OK, maybe I didn’t take the picture on May Day. But that’s when I’m posting it, so it still seems appropriate. Let’s hope spring is here to stay now.

Excuse to break the run of what had been 18 days since the last time there was a morning shot, on 19th March. Even if today’s was only just in the morning.
A morning’s spring cleaning on the allotments revealed this colony of frogs living in an old plastic bath on one of our neighbouring plots. These two seem close….
I could have picked a photo to epitomise my day in London, which was spent entirely in one meeting room in the Friends’ Meeting House near Euston. A productive meeting generally, but not photographically.
So instead let’s go with the cute rodent…. Squirrel!
I’m pretty sure this is the plant growing out of the wall down Keighley Road that becomes the purple spearheads of buddleia later in the year. Metamorphosis. I quite like both forms of it, actually.
With the extinction of pollinating insects being one of the more plausible end-of-the-world scenarios doing the rounds, it’s gratifying that this one has survived the cold snap and sees in our winter-flowering heather some pleasant sustenance. I like how it looks as if its little eyes are closed, though of course that’s not how insect eyes work. Gives it a look of contentment though.
Evidence of new tactics in the ongoing pigeon-duck conflict. “Hah. I knew this camouflage would eventually come in useful. Now I can spy on the ducks without fear of detection.”
“Er… Bob? The feet?”
“Oh bugger.”
