Joe at the Handmade Parade

Sunday 25th June 2017, 12.15pm (day 2,131)

Joe, Handmade Parade, 25/6/17

Having taken Friday off work because of the funeral Sunday was a day at the desk for me, but at least around lunchtime there was the distraction of the 2017 Handmade Parade, Hebden Bridge’s annual photo-fest. Having featured this event on several occasions before (it’s made it every year from 2012 onwards), let’s add distinctiveness to this year’s entry by featuring Joe in his home-made finery. As ever, hearty congratulations to all who took part, the level of effort and creativity which goes into this totally non-corporate event still amazes me.

Friday evening in the Railway

Friday 19th May 2017, 6.55pm (day 2,094)

In the Railway, 19/5/17

I should count up how many photos out of the 2,094 published so far have been taken in or around the Railway Inn, Hebden Bridge. I imagine it must be pushing three figures by now, making the rate one every two or three weeks on average — and that allowing for the two long hiatuses caused by the floods, with it having been closed for the second half of 2012 and pretty much all of 2016. For ten years from about 2005 this was the only pub in Hebden Bridge I drank in (ever) — more recently I have diversified a little, but in the end this is still ‘my local’. Long life and good health to it and all who drink there.

Railway rebuilt (and Matt)

Thursday 16th February 2017, 3.40pm (day 2,002)

Matt at Railway, 17/2/17

The Railway pub was shut for nearly a year after being mostly destroyed in the flood of 26th December 2015. It has reopened in what feels like a few separate stages; the latest arriving today, when seating finally made a reappearance out at the front. Matt enjoys this fresh luxury, while trying not to mark his coat on the wet paint of the new battleship grey facade.

Outside Calan’s

Saturday 20th August 2016, 4.25pm (day 1,822)

Outside Calan's, 20/8/16

It’s a Saturday, it’s a time for relaxation, and drinking. It’s still raining. It’s the Hebden Bridge “Steampunk” theme weekend, what this really does to advance the cause of social justice I haven’t worked out yet but people turn up in places dressed in Victoriana. All these things combine in today’s shot.

Contact

Sunday 14th August 2016, 4.55pm (day 1,816)

Biker and pigeon, 14/8/16

Exactly what this biker and this pigeon were finding to talk about this afternoon by the Hebden old bridge, I have no idea — but there is clearly some communication here.

A gaggle

Wednesday 15th June 2016, 1.40pm (day 1,756)

Gaggle, 15/6/16

When are there enough geese for a gaggle? Will four do? When does a gaggle become a flock? Pictured on the canal at Hebden Bridge station this afternoon.

Sunday afternoon snack

Sunday 24th April 2016, 3.20pm (day 1,704)

Sat on wall, 24/4/16

Although a chillier day today than it has been, I think we can still say that spring is here. Not sure whether these two were feeding themselves, or the ducks in the river below their feet (and cropped out of shot), but either way the title still applies. Why the black and white? Why not? Sometimes the colours just don’t work out so well.

Clare, Saturday night out

Saturday 6th February 2016, 9.30pm (day 1,626)

Clare at Trades, 6/2/16

It’s been months since there was a proper portrait of the wife on this blog, so let’s make up for it with this shot from our night out at the Trades Club (‘Nutclough City Limits’). Clare seems to be enjoying the evening despite the fact that a small woman appears to be dancing on her belly.

Rochdale Canal at Callis Wood lock

Friday 22nd January 2016, 4.15pm (day 1,611)

Canal at Callis, 22/1/16

Part of the reason I have felt uninspired lately is that I’ve been spending too many days at home, not going out. Also that the light has been very poor — I swear we’ve had half a dozen sunny days at most since the start of November. But both of those things changed for the better this very pleasant afternoon when I managed a stroll along the canal bank. Much of the towpath is still closed because of flood damage but this section, at the Callis Wood bottom lock, is still open.

Cricket on Midsummer’s Day

Sunday 21st June 2015, 5.10pm (day 1,396)

Midsummer cricket, 21/6/15

Cripes. Can it get any more English? Midsummer’s Day, the weather wasn’t great, but then again it wasn’t terrible either (certainly better than three years ago today, and its aftermath); in all, a good day was had. I have no idea how this match turned out by the way — I was just passing.
