The Truss regime unveil their new approach to sustainable transport solutions for the North of England. Quiet and clean, these devices will doubtless prove a more than adequate substitute for TransPennine ‘Express’, and its present business model of dissuading absolutely everyone from using their services, at any time. “We think this will do for that scabby region up towards Scotland that we don’t give a toss about”, said Truss’s new Transport Secretary, who no one can remember the name of. “At £104.85 for a single ticket to Leeds, I’m sure the people of the North will appreciate the value-for-money that our investments in their transport infrastructure and welfare….. Whaddya mean you’re ungrateful? We’ve got some big tax cuts for the top 1% of earners to pay for!”

The road to the beach

Cycling to beach, 24/8/22

Despite being in the centre of the Netherlands, Wageningen does officially have a beach, and this cyclist was on her way there; it’s on one of the arms of the Rhine. I paid it a brief visit, but just to check it out — I do stilll have some work to do.

Out in the open

Duddon valley, 5/12/20

The River Duddon starts at Wrynose Pass and carves out a very fine course for itself, both with its valley and its spectacular estuary (which has featured in its own right on this blog, more than once). It’s just the kind of place that we need ever more in the modern world. The five cyclists you see here know this, I know this. This is the true measure of ‘public health’.

Far too nice a morning to stay indoors today and wait like little sheep to be told that we need to stay indoors a lot more, like until Christmas. A walk along the Rochdale Canal in the morning lightened the spirits and boosted the immune system, which is, of course, why we do it.

A bus swarm

Anyone unfamiliar with Manchester might imagine for a moment this pic is Photoshopped, but no, you really can see upward of 11 buses in a row on Oxford Road at certain points in time (not to mention the two or three more that were just to my left as I took this). On the one level this kind of phenomenon amuses me, but on the other hand I can’t help thinking of the other communities out there (like Sabden, Shap) that might benefit from having a spare bus or two now and again.

Having never been to Cambridge in my life until January this year, it’s a definite discovery of 2016. I returned today for a seminar and will be back there in a fortnight, too. Parts of it are as beautiful as anywhere I have ever been, like a fairytale almost, particularly with the golden leaves of autumn. This picture depicts none of that, but I like it anyway; most of the place seems to look something like this, including all the bicycles.

The peloton

Following the perceived success of last year’s passing of the Tour de France, everyone decided it would be a good idea to run another professional cycle race along our street — only this time going up the hill rather than down it. The end result was much the same — a lot of guys on bikes came past very quickly and 30 seconds after they had done so, all the spectators went home.

The world’s greatest cycle race comes through Nutclough…

Tour de France, 6/7/14

…so I think the Tour de France should be the subject of today’s picture… don’t you? I doubt any other world-class sporting event is going to come within a few feet of my front door again. Of all the ones I got today I like because of my friend Simon’s smile, and also the fact it has the yellow jersey on it — he’s just visible in the centre.
