Cider tasting

Monday 13th November 2017, 7.40pm (day 2,272)

Cider tasting, 13/11/17

First day of the academic conference that has brought me to the east coast. I could picture the intellectual efforts, but let’s go with the evening’s alcohol consumption instead. These guys (from the Hedge Hoggers company) not only served us samples of their product but engaged us in its manufacture as well, hence the barrel of apples captured in the background. I don’t even like cider particularly, and I’m not saying I was converted, but it was a damn good effort.

Preparing pepper soup

Saturday 6th May 2017, 2.00pm (day 2,081)

Preparing peppers, 6/5/17

There’s a very well known photograph of a pepper by Edward Weston — here it is — but he was a guy who had the time and commitment to spend days photographing this one thing and invest it with mystical qualities. I was just making soup. This is why I’ll never be a pro photographer. But I still like peppers as objects, the way they’re not as soft as they initially look they might be (like tomatoes) and inside they have these weird landscapes of seed and flesh. And the soup was nice too.

Free food (spring season)

Wild garlic, 24/4/17

Wild garlic — the spring version of free food. (Blackberries are the autumn bounty.)

Pizza dough prep

Monday 19th September 2016, 3.50pm (day 1,852)

Dough prep, 19/9/16

Gosh, it was an exciting day here in the household today, I can tell you. Still, I quite like this shot, considering the limited opportunities the day threw up; I like the various arcs and textures and that it’s nearly monochrome, but with that nice blue intrusion of the cup.

Harvest bounty

Wednesday 24th August 2016, 5.15pm (day 1,826)

Fruit harvest, 24/8/16

As August winds down each year there are some regular events, firstly, I get a year older and so the title of this blog becomes one more year out of date — that’s coming on Friday. To ease the pain of this, however, the garden finally begins to pay off. Blackberries, blueberries and rhubarb in this shot, with apples and plums gathered but unseen here (we have realised fruit is much less hassle than vegetables). There must be a photo like this every year around this time, and hopefully that isn’t going to change however far I take this blog.

Dinner preparations

Monday 18th April 2016, 5.25pm (day 1,698)

Ingredients, 18/4/16

Another one of those exciting Mondays working at home, where I need to crank up the creativity not only to take the photo but also to think of a pithy commentary. Which, today, I can’t. Happy Mondays.

The beginnings of pickle

Sunday 6th December 2015, 1.40pm (day 1,564)

Pickle beginnings, 6/12/15

Coming to the end of a long (for me) period of time spent entirely at home. Let’s enjoy the kitchen while I’m still around. This stuff takes an hour to make and costs about three pounds for a year’s supply — and is the best goddamn piccalilli I’ve ever had.

Liz and her roulade

Wednesday 18th February 2015, 1.30pm (day 1,273)

Liz and roulade, 18/2/15

First day of a welcome five-day break from work. As a gift bought last year (months ago, in fact), Clare booked me on a baking course today run by the very impressive set up at Slattery’s in north Manchester (actually Bury). Got up very early, put in as hard a day’s work as I have in a long time, and came out of it with a lot of very nice cakes and ideas about how to repeat this production process. I tried to document it on camera as well without getting too much in the way or distracted from my own labours. Here Liz, one of my four fellow students, gets her roulade base out of the oven, to soon be filled with strawberries and cream. Yum.

Making pasta

Sunday 14th December 2014, 5.25pm (day 1,207)

Making pasta, 14/12/14

It would be lovely if I had been able to head off to some dramatic windswept coastal spot or gone up a mountain or made some other such photogenic opportunity. But I did tell you it wasn’t going to be an exciting weekend. So, courtesy of the self-timer, here’s me making dinner again. And yes, I can do pasta from scratch, it’s not that difficult.

Stir-fry ingredients

Saturday 6th December 2014, 6.20pm (day 1,199)

Stir fry, 6/12/14

It says a lot when you get a photo of my dinner, or rather dinner-to-be, as photo of the day. But on a grey, dull and uneventful December day, this was a splash of colour and form, at least.
