View from the sixth floor

View from the 6th floor, 13/4/17

Office-wise I’ve been based in the Ellen Wilkinson Building for nearly 12 years now but have little reason to venture up to its sixth floor (if you live in most of the rest of the world, its seventh). When I do I am reminded what a decent view it has, even if today the light wasn’t as it could be. But there’s quite a distance in sight here, south to the Derbyshire Pennines, and the tower of Manchester Royal Infirmary nearer the camera.

I post this picture also to launch myself on one of these mini blog-projects that sometimes motivate me. Coming up: eleven different photo locations in eleven days. Let’s do it.

How nice it is that I have a job that frequently permits me the chance to get out of cold, damp, dark Britain in the depths of January. Many people would here make a point of going somewhere warm and sunny, like Australia, or the Mediterranean. I am a contrary bugger though, so I’ve come to Moscow.

A very warm and pleasant morning. It wasn’t going to last, though — not with those mares’ tails up there. And nor did it — by 5pm it was happily raining again in Manchester.

The Duddon Estuary and Black Combe

Duddon Estuary, 4/6/16

One of England’s best-looking, and also hardest-to-reach corners. I have been doing this blog long enough to have photo locations recur even though it feels like quite a while since I was there, and this is true here — the slopes of Black Combe (the 1970′ above sea level mountain in the background), the Duddon Eastuary, and local fauna, featured on this decent shot taken back in October 2013. Today’s shot was taken from near Foxfield station on the long train journey home: not a bad picture for one taken from a moving train through glass, although there are some reflections visible near the centre if one knows where to look.

Rupture

With a whole day spent at home working online, it was left to the sky to entertain. This looks like a hole in the space-time continuum has opened up above the houses of Heptonstall Road. Or possibly just a break in the clouds near the setting sun.

Mist in Yorkshire this morning, clear skies in Lancashire, with this photo taken almost right on the border between the two, up on the Long Causeway, above Todmorden. I know I did wind turbines 12 days ago, but it’s impossible to resist returning to the theme.

After having walked 25 miles over the last two days I was quite content never to leave the house today, so whatever you were getting as photo of the day was going to be very close to home — until the Moon showed up.
