The new tram line

Monday 11th January 2016, 3.05pm (day 1,600)

Tramline works, 11/1/16

This nice round-number blog post is marked by yet another shot of Manchester city centre’s ongoing building works — a theme that is becoming recurrent, because they just never seem to end…

St. Peter’s Square

Tuesday 5th January 2015, 2.35pm (day 1,594)

St. Peter's Square, 5/1/16

The building works in St. Peter’s Square, Manchester, do not seem to have advanced a huge amount since they were pictured nearly a year ago (26/1/15). Never mind, they remain good photographic subjects. I like this one because it seems like a collage of shapes and textures, but there is still an underlying logic to it.

Old BBC site, Manchester

Friday 9th October 2015, 9.40am (day 1,506)

Old BBC building, 9/10/15

Little seems to have happened to the site of the old BBC building since the structure was removed three years ago. My confident (but wholly ironic) prediction that it might get turned into eco-friendly affordable housing seems as far away as ever.

Road works outside our house

Friday 4th September 2015, 10.05am (day 1,471)

Road works, 4/9/15

And yet more construction, this time in Hebden Bridge and pictured from the bathroom window of our house. These road works have been protracted — the picture of the happy drill was taken around their starting point. This has been a very Hebden-bound period of the blog.

This was also a photowhack — the one and only photo taken on a particular day.

The central Manchester building site

Thursday 3rd September 2015, 10.30am (day 1,470)

Kent Street, 3/9/15

The whole of Manchester city centre is currently a building site, has been for months, and is scheduled to be so for many more months yet. But it seems to be spreading beyond just the new tramline (the ostensible reason for the chaos) and into the associated demolition of various other locations — the building being torn down here was the one on the right on this shot, for example. Who knows what the final plan will be.

Bradford city centre

Wednesday 22nd July 2015, 3.10pm (day 1,427)

Bradford city park, 22/7/15

Downtown Bradford has been a hole for a while now, a big building site that carved out the centre of the city and then stopped evolving for years, because the money ran out. But there seems to have been some movement on it lately, which is good for Bradford’s sake and also because it generally indicates that public infrastructure projects have not yet quite died a death in this country — though perhaps this one was just too embarrassing to leave half-completed.

‘Scaffolding’

Sunday 1st March 2015, 6.15pm (day 1,284)

Scaffolding, 1/3/15

Standing outside the pub taking this and friend Sandra said, ‘so, are you going to call that one ‘Scaffolding’ then?’.

OK, why not.

St. Peter’s Square building site

Monday 26th January 2015, 5.00pm (day 1,250)

St. Peter's Square, 26/1/15

Sometimes one must just acknowledge that all the pictures taken on a given day were a bit crap one way or another. This at least epitomises the fact that most of Manchester city centre is currently a building site. Don’t get used to seeing it though — the rest of the week I’m at home, marking. Things will liven up again soon I hope.

The Victoria Road building site

Saturday 22nd November 2014, 3.00pm (day 1,185)

Victoria Road site, 22/11/14

This is the building site that children should not play on (as pictured behind the playground equipment a couple of weeks ago). A burst of sunlight caught it very well this afternoon.
