Wrong train, right station?

Wednesday 26th June 2019, 8.10am (day 2,862)

Station sign, 26/6/19

A sign that I have passed many times over the last years, and yet never depicted on here before today. Is there a reason for this — either way? Probably not. Was the message apposite today? Also probably not, but I like it anyway. I have got on many wrong trains down the years, as I’m sure we all have. Yet here we all are.

“The Handmaid’s Tale”

Tuesday 25th June 2019, 8.55pm (day 2,861)

Handmaids tale, 25/6/19

Could John Logie Baird have foreseen ‘the box set’, I wonder. Perhaps so — after all it’s not radically removed from the novel as Dickens wrote it. With his exams finished, Joe here adopts a position he’ll doubtless choose to remain in all summer, although we’re working on it. Meanwhile, Clare knits to relieve the excitement.

Canal Street lock, Manchester

Monday 24th June 2019, 9.05am (day 2,860)

Canal Street lock, 24/6/19

It’s nice to be reminded that the canal that runs through the very centre of Manchester still operates properly, a couple of hundred years after it was first built; and as ever, shots like these also remind me that this is the same canal, the Rochdale Canal, as runs through Hebden Bridge. So this boat could have been chugging through my home town a week or so ago. I imagine a few things about this scene have changed since the 1820s, however.

After “Late Night”

Sunday 23rd June 2019, 10.30pm (day 2,859)

Walking home, 23/6/19

To culminate a good weekend, a night out, to the cinema to see Late Night (which is pretty good by the way). A late night in blog terms anyway — the latest photo in a day since 1st March. But still not quite a dark sky, thanks to the summer solstice an’ all. Clare makes her way home on a photo that is perhaps a little blurry and confused, but so was I at this point.

The summit of Holyhead Mountain (county top #1)

Saturday 22nd June 2019, 10.45am (day 2,858)

Holyhead Mountain summit, 22/6/19

24 hours in Holyhead, Anglesey, planned around the enjoyment of two of my principal leisure pursuits. The footie was yesterday, the walk today. As you can see, the weather was… pretty decent. I seem not to be able to resist the temptation to collect places, and for a while have been preparing to set out to bag the highest points in all the counties of Great Britain, and with Holyhead Mountain, this, almost accidentally, kicks it off… so out spurts another blog, which you may or may not like to check out. While you’re here though, is it me or does that trig point look like the robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still?

The winners

Friday 21st June 2019, 5.25pm (day 2,857)

Isle of Man women, 21/6/19

People have been very much in the background of the blog in the last three weeks, if they appear at all. There have been glimpses of a foot here and there, the back of a head.

Football has also been absent from the blog over the last three weeks, but hey, all close seasons must end, mine as soon as possible. The women seen here are the from Isle of Man team and are celebrating their win in the 2019 Island Games tournament final, 2-1 over Ynys Môn, also known as Anglesey.

The connection between these two absences may be coincidental, but I like it.

Not a spider

Thursday 20th June 2019, 10.40am (day 2,856)

Long leg insect, 20/6/19

Working at home this morning, this thing starts crawling up the wall with its extraordinarily long legs. Imagine translating those legs to human size, they’d be thirty feet tall, you’d be one of the tripods from War of the Worlds. But seeing as it only has six of them — a spider this is not….

Chetham’s Library, Manchester

Wednesday 19th June 2019, 11.10am (day 2,855)

Chetham's Library, 19/6/19

Now that’s a proper library. And I was here for scholarly purposes, too. Occasionally it is still possible to feel that in my profession, things are as they were a couple of centuries ago. I mean, in a good way.

Wait!

Monday 17th June 2019, 3.50pm (day 2,853)

Amber light, 17/6/19

With seven of the last eight shots, including this one, being taken in Hebden Bridge, and with a distinct lack of people in them, you can deduce that on the whole I have been indoors writing. It’s gone well, but it doesn’t make for very exciting photography. I am reduced today to a shot of the lights for the roadworks outside our house, which I’m sure drivers will be happy to hear had no sign of human presence today either. Only the lights were putting the hours in.

Competitor, Blue Pig Race 2019

Sunday 16th June 2019, 4.15pm (day 2,852)

Blue pig race, 16/6/19

“And now we’re going live to the 2019 Blue Pig Race on the Hebden Water….”

“Yes Alan, the race is certainly reaching a climax this year, good water conditions but let’s remember what these competitors have to go through each year… a fearsome twenty-foot drop at the start and there are always casualties there… then the rapids…. look at the grim determination on the face of number 4!!….”
