Filming “Happy Valley”

Friday 21st January 2022, 3.35pm (day 3,802)

Filming crane, 21/1/22

Those of you who enjoyed the previous two series of Happy Valley (and the first, at least, was excellent), be assured that a third series is on the way; no one in Hebden Bridge could have failed to appreciate this today.

One of the things that was good about the series was that it was all filmed on location in Calderdale, and extremely authentic: people used the right local names for things, for example (like calling Todmorden “Tod”, which everyone does). As this light was shining up Hangingroyd Lane this afternoon I assume that Sgt. Cawood is still going to be depicted as living at no. 29, so probably the one little bit of fiction will be retained — in the series, she can always get a parking space right outside her house, in the centre of town. Yeah…. right.

Manchester Victoria (monochrome)

Thursday 20th January 2022, 2.00pm (day 3,801)

Manchester Victoria, 20/1/22

“Go back to the office!” says the Chief Clown, though going on numbers coming through Manchester Victoria in the mornings, most of the population (those who can, anyway) feel quite happy with the idea that they might make this judgment on their own. Admittedly 2pm isn’t peak time but one still might have expected a few more people around.

POSTSCRIPT: To be fair, I was browsing earlier pictures just now and found this one from almost exactly 5 years ago (25th Jan. 2017), of the same spot; and there weren’t any people on that one, either. Comparison of the two photos also shows how the light shines through exactly the same bit of the roof at this exact time of day in late January; and the photogenic consequences of this.

Self-portrait in grubby car

Wednesday 19th January 2022, 2.55pm (day 3,800)

Self portrait, grubby car, 19/1/22

Just one of those images noticed on the way down to town. It certainly is a very grubby car, but at least this records someone else’s artwork, before it gets cleaned off. A photowhack (the only photo taken today), and also a picture taken, totally inadvertently, at exactly the same time as yesterday’s (within a minute). This is the kind of trivia I seem to care about the most these days — see the updated stats page too, as it’s a round number day today.

Model in the House of Pain

Tuesday 18th January 2022, 2.55pm (day 3,799)

Acupuncture points, 18/1/22

A twinge in my leg meant I booked myself in for a massage, but any images that word may conjure up, of women lying blissfully on a couch while being gently caressed, can be dismissed in favour of being wrestled and half-beaten into submission. At least I did not plump for the acupuncture; this model in the foyer of the House of Pain suggests there are far too many points of fresh, new torture to discover on the human body.

Great hair

Monday 17th January 2022, 8.35pm (day 3,798)

Brighouse bar, 17/1/22

Half-time in yet another football match. An opportunity to notice that the bar manager at Brighouse Town has great hair, well lit. That’s all.

View over Halifax

Sunday 16th January 2022, 1.15pm (day 3,797)

View from Norwood Green, 16/1/22

The hoped-for walk duly happened — leg 6 of the Calderdale Way was completed, with Clare, over four months after the last one. But we are getting round, and somewhere just before this shot was taken (from Norwood Green, a village on the outskirts of Halifax) we turned generally to the west and started heading back home. There are a couple more days’ walking to do before it’s finished, at some not-yet-determined future date.

Kiveton Miners Welfare FC

Saturday 15th January 2022, 3.20pm (day 3,796)

Kiveton MW v Sheffield, 15/1/22

Forty or more years ago, in the background of this image would once have been a colliery. Not any more, but the name and very existence of Kiveton Miners Welfare FC pays homage to the vanished industry. A cold day in South Yorkshire, but the sun came out in the second half and washed everything in gold, so I forgave it.

Moon over Hebden

Friday 14th January 2022, 4.20pm (day 3,795)

Moon over HB, 15/1/22

The evenings obviously get lighter through January — though it takes a while for the mornings to catch up. The moon is on the wax at the moment, Boris Johnson is an idiot (just thought I’d mention that) and the weekend is here.

I’d rather be walking

Thursday 13th January 2022, 12.45pm (day 3,794)

Walking gear, 13/1/22

This post harks back to Tuesday — not that I needed the ice axe and microspikes on that glorious day, in fact it was laughable overpacking, which in some perverse way may explain why they’ve not yet been put away. I’d rather have been walking today too, but the house, and the marking load, was my prison.

View towards the Mancunian Way

Wednesday 12th January 2022, 9.00am (day 3,793)

Mancunian Way, 12/1/22

My first Manchester shot for four weeks — and the first one before 10am for five weeks. These two facts are not unrelated, the connecting factor being ‘going to work’, or at least, visiting the office. Not that Manchester has yet busied up much (will it ever do so again?) although January is always a quieter time, which is why I like it, particularly when the sun shines.
