The penultimate sunset of the year

Wednesday 30th December 2020, 3.30pm (day 3,415)

House view, 30/12/20

Without even having to be subtle about it, the moronocracy have ensured not a single pub nor place of entertainment will be open for New Year’s Eve anywhere in the UK, so I don’t feel 2020 is really ending — it will go on to infect our future for years to come. It’s going out cold, too: this was probably the coldest day of the year. This view from the upper reaches of my house has appeared on the blog many times before but it’s a useful mainstay, and on this one I like the addition of the headlights of the car caught heading up Birchcliffe Road.

Back home

Tuesday 29th December 2020, 2.30pm (day 3,414)

Snow above HB, 29/12/20

A slight dusting of snow in the morning, nothing serious but in Britain it’s the kind of thing that leads to everything getting cancelled, meaning I couldn’t attend my planned football match this evening and thus get 11 different places in 11 days. There are still things to see at home, however. Which, looking back on 2020, is just as well, isn’t it?

Norwich market, Christmas Eve

Thursday 24th December 2020, 11.00am (day 3,409)

Norwich market, 24/12/20

Last-minute Christmas shopping? Alone, and masked. Such is the way of it in 2020.

Cromer Pier

Wednesday 23rd December 2020, 12.15pm (day 3,408)

Cromer Pier, 23/12/20

If given the chance I would remove the white lines on the bottom right and there’s a little red sign between the benches that bothers me. But otherwise I am satisfied with this shot of the landward end of Cromer Pier which evokes a misty but pleasant day doing very little in North Norfolk, waiting…

Manchester fluddle

Wednesday 16th December 2020, 1.00pm (day 3,401)

Manchester puddle, 16/12/20

My penultimate day in Manchester, 2020. A year which has had fewer such days than expected. How often does the place display its appalling street drainage? I think this is a big contributor to the city’s reputation for wetness.

Outside, where I was not

Monday 14th December 2020, 4.35pm (day 3,399)

Nutclough evening, 14/12/20

A blurred, inadequate shot. But one day will come the day when there is nothing to photograph, and lately I feel I’ve been getting close to that. December gloom, a day spent marking. Out there are people in their little bubbles, and sometimes, a car drives by. Welcome to party season.

Not-Friday

Friday 11th December 2020, 5.00pm (day 3,396)

Friday evening, 11/12/20

Tough brief today, to document a day spent marking, and in meetings, and no light, just a grey December flatness. And we remain in not-quite-life, of course. Everything that Authority feels it cannot control, it has shut down. Bojo the Clown still can’t do something that he’s been campaigning for for half a decade now. On such a day, a shot of, basically, nothing seems appropriate to the mood. Best I managed, anyway.

Brownies, in Bath

Tuesday 8th December 2020, 6.05pm (day 3,393)

Brownies in Bath, 8/12/20

I subsist, at least in part, on a drip-feed of different places. Despite its privations 2020 has still seen its fair share of new locations, and already more than 2016, which only had 20 new ones all year. Tonight I find myself in Bath — new location number 27 of 2020 (and 327 in total). This is a city that’s been around in some form or another for nearly 2,000 years, since the Romans founded Britain’s first spa, under the building seen here. So quite probably, people have been selling tidbits in this spot for a couple of millennia, too.

Waiting for Christmas

Thursday 3rd December 2020, 9.25am (day 3,388)

String of lights, 3/12/20

Another less-than-exciting day…. This is never the most dynamic time of the year, is it? And in 2020…. like these lights, we are all just waiting for Christmas, which may or may not make a difference.

Brook Street, Manchester

Tuesday 1st December 2020, 8.15am (day 3,386)

Brook Street, 1/12/20

The traffic lights say go, for what cars there are. No social commentary today, I just like the effect of a fairly long zoom down Brook Street, taken on my way to the office.
