The Crown lies empty

Friday 1st March 2024, 4.25pm (day 4,572)

Side of the Crown, 1/3/24

Several public houses premises in and around Hebden Bridge have lain empty for years. This is the old Crown Inn in the town centre: at my back as I took this photo was Marshall’s Bar; neither of them made it through 2020 and have remained closed and empty since. Some pubs on the approach roads to town (like the Woodsman Inn) have been lying derelict for two decades now. Yet the contradictions of the property market are such that it seems now, by law, only new café-bars and restaurants are allowed to open in the town. It is clearly cheaper and more desirable to convert a former bank into a pub than convert a former pub into a reopened pub.

Sunday dog walk

Sunday 25th February 2024, 11.05am (day 4,567)

Sunday dog walk, 25/2/24

A pleasant day for sure. Long may it last (it probably won’t). I’m sure the dogs appreciate it just as much as the walkers do.

Moon over Eiffel Buildings

Monday 19th February 2024, 6.20pm (day 4,561)

Moon over Eiffel Buildings, 19/2/24

Hardly the most sumptuous shot. photographically, but it suffices to represent a day spent entirely in the local vicinity. It’s getting lighter in the evenings, as it always will at this time of year, but not yet past 6pm.

Hurst Road

Sunday 11th February 2024, 1.10pm (day 4,553)

Hurst Road, 11/2/24

The first shot taken in Hebden Bridge since 25th January. It’s nice to travel, but it is also nice to come home. Even if the weather while I was away was wintrier here than in Canada — this much is obvious.

Green light for more rain

Sunday 21st January 2024, 5.20pm (day 4,532)

Rain and green light, 21/1/24

Well, it was quite nice for a day or two. It didn’t last. This picture was chosen for today, in part, because Clare insisted I not use the one of her putting on her slippers, but nevertheless this does epitomise the day.

The graveyard on the hill

Tuesday 16th January 2024, 11.25am (day 4,527)

Graveyard on hill, 16/1/24

Snow was forecast and duly arrived, though it was hardly a winter apocalypse. It did make the town look good, though. This graveyard sits on the hillside across the valley from my house: it takes a long zoom to pick it out in a photo and, usually it’s all rather brown and unprominent. But I like the way the snow picks out the headstones, like rim-light, almost.

In the beer garden

Wednesday 10th January 2023, 4.55pm (day 4,521)

White Swan garden, 10/1/24

Those of us in exile in the beer garden must have our reasons…. perhaps just misanthropy, in my case. The two women doubtless have their own thoughts on this. But the weather was OK so why not? Is that even a bit of light in the evening sky? I believe so.

January mist (with bird)

Wednesday 3rd January 2024, 1.10pm (day 4,514)

Mist and bird, 3/1/24

Another low-contrast kind of day, spent at home working, little to see other than what the local landscape, weather and birdlife allow. In the end, this was the day’s best combination of those factors.

Windy

Thursday 21st December 2023, 3.50pm (day 4,501)

Bin down, 21/12/23

Wind is the hardest weather condition of all to capture adequately on camera — but it was very windy today. We will rebuild, however.

Market Street, round the back

Wednesday 20th December 2023, 4.20pm (day 4,500)

Squat the airbnbs, 20/12/23

It’s a valid political opinion. Whether anyone pays attention is a different matter.

This has hardly been the most eventful December — not a single photo in the month so far has been taken further than 30 miles from home — but this will change soon enough. Today is also day 4,500 of the blog, a nice round number: I have done one of my periodic updates of the stats, a page which if nothing else, proves quite how anal I am.
