On the Thames

Tuesday 23rd September 2025, 8.50am (day 5,143)

Thames rower, 23/9/25

I am back in London for another stint rooting around the National Archives. So, as with the last time I was there in February 2023, I get to walk to work along the banks of the Thames. This particular stretch seems very popular with rowers. Personally I doubt I could comfortably adopt this form of exercise due to freaking out about the travelling backwards, not seeing where I was going thing, but obviously they don’t care about things like bridges.

Cougar Park gates

Saturday 20th September 2025, 4.00pm (day 5,140)

Cougar Park gates, 20/9/25

I pick this shot for the colour palette mainly — the blue of of his jacket works very well. It is taken from inside the ground, as the reversal of the lettering makes evident. As you can also see — it is raining, a lot. But the game behind me did manage to reach a conclusion. Nothing to do with Keighley Cougars, a rugby league club (you have never seen rugby league depicted on here, and unless I radically change in my remaining years, you never will) — the owners of that club decided they fancied a football team as well so simply bought one, Eccleshill United of Bradford, and teleported them here for as long as they feel like dabbling in another mode of football.

Storm at Solihull Moors

Saturday 13th September 2025, 2.40pm (day 5,133)

Solihull storm, 13/9/25

This shot somewhat misrepresents the day’s weather, as for most of my time in Solihull today (near Birmingham, and making its debut on the blog) I walked and sat in quite pleasant sunshine. But not from between about 2.30 – 2.50pm. And the seats for the match to come were not under cover. Fortunately, it stopped, and two other big fat thunderheads that looked like they were later coming in also passed us by.

Cricket landscape, Oxenhope

Saturday 23rd August 2025, 2.20pm (day 5,112)

Oxenhope cricket, 23/8/25

I’ve done quite a few ‘football landscapes’ over the years but never a cricket one. Not that I’ve changed my sporting allegiance — this was just seen in passing. While I was on my way to a football match, in fact. Oxenhope would make a picturesque backdrop for just about any sport, though.

Sunday football, Peel Park

Sunday 17th August 2025, 12.10pm (day 5,106)

Peel Park football, 17/8/25

With little better that was worth doing this morning I wandered over to Bradford where the local Sunday leagues were running their first round of fixtures for the season. Three games were taking place simultaneously on Peel Park and this shot is taken from a point kind of in the middle of each of them, but with this pitch slightly elevated, hence the low viewpoint. This was one of those pictures which is being used here because it was what was intended when the shutter was pressed: always a good thing.

Stromness and Ward Hill: a combination of pleasures

Tuesday 29th July 2025, 7.05pm (day 5,087)

Stromness FC and Ward Hill, 29/7/25

The first part of my day was spent up the hill in the background, Ward Hill: not an easy lump of sandstone to get up or down, thanks to its steep sides (evident in this shot), but worth the bother. The second part of my day was spent at the easier-to-reach environs of Stromness FC, members of the Orkney ‘A’ League, and their match against Dounby (here in blue). I couldn’t decide which one was worth making Pic of the Day so let’s just choose one that accommdates both these pleasures.

Busting the photographer

Saturday 5th July 2025, 3.40pm (day 5,063)

Busted at Hanley Town, 5/7/25

I was taking a shot of the dog, when the guy turned around as well to finish it off. Yes, the 2025-26 football season — at least, some its ‘pre-season friendly stage’ — is up and running…

Pre-match atmosphere

Wednesday 14th May 2025, 7.45pm (day 5,011)

Halifax fans, 14/5/25

Two minutes to go before kick-off and someone, somewhere lets off a flare to add to the atmosphere. The two guys in the centre look pretty tense about it all. And considering their team are about to concede three soft goals in the first 12 minutes of the game that is to come, they were justified — not that they knew that at this point. Final score, Oldham Athletic 4, Halifax Town 0. This lot all go home now and wait for next season.

No. 11’s celebration

Friday 9th May 2025, 8.00pm (day 5,006)

Celebratory kiss, 9/5/25

Half an hour into the Yorkshire Amateur League Cup Final in Bradford (well, how do you spend pleasant, sunny Friday evenings towards the end of a season?) and Berry Brow’s no. 11, Kyle Walton, dinks the ball over the Ryburn Utd keeper for a 1-0 lead. Having spotted my camera, this was his chosen means of celebration. And it was kind of amusing, so I’ll let him off the need to wipe the lens clean afterwards. They went on to win 2-0. (Clare insisted I use this picture today, and who am I to argue.)

Marsden FC

Wednesday 30th April 2025, 7.40pm (day 4,997)

Marsden football landscape, 30/4/25

Sometimes there is no better place to spend a glorious evening than somewhere like Marsden FC. Not quite perfection — there were too many insects buzzing around for that — but not bad, not bad at all.
