No. 11’s celebration

Friday 9th May 2025, 8.00pm (day 5,006)

Celebratory kiss, 9/5/25

Half an hour into the Yorkshire Amateur League Cup Final in Bradford (well, how do you spend pleasant, sunny Friday evenings towards the end of a season?) and Berry Brow’s no. 11, Kyle Walton, dinks the ball over the Ryburn Utd keeper for a 1-0 lead. Having spotted my camera, this was his chosen means of celebration. And it was kind of amusing, so I’ll let him off the need to wipe the lens clean afterwards. They went on to win 2-0. (Clare insisted I use this picture today, and who am I to argue.)

Studious contemplation

Tuesday 6th March 2025, 9.35am (day 5,003)

My last scheduled day of on-campus teaching in this academic year. Very few turned up, but that’s OK, it was an optional class. Hopefully they are all off in studious contemplation somewhere, like she seems to be: although quite probably she’s just checking social media while she has her fag.

Watching the game

Monday 5th May 2025, 4.20pm (day 5,002)

Fan portrait, 5/5/25

I pick this one today because I think it’s a nice portrait, though I don’t know these gentlemen and so can’t be sure it captures some kind of essential quality about them. But I see a lot of football these days — the game mentioned in the post title was my 80th of the season and I intend to do a few more yet before it’s over — and I see a lot of people like these, as we’re all in it together.

Alex needs a spray

Sunday 27th April 2025, 12.55pm (day 4,994)

Marathon finish, 26/4/25

The Manchester marathon took place in quite warm conditions and Alex definitely needed this assistance as he passed the 26-mile marker, thus, 385 yards to go. By the time she reached this point — over four hours later — Clare was also very much in need of some water, but she made it nevertheless, thus completing her second marathon after Edinburgh in May last year. That’s two more than I have ever done, or ever will do: even at walking pace (like, up a mountain or something) I see no need to ever propel myself 26.2 miles in one day. Well done to all who do so.

The hen party heads for Liverpool

Saturday 26th April 2025, 12.25pm (day 4,993)

There must surely be a kind of terror in the face of the stag and — even more so — the hen parties that descend on certain places every weekend. Liverpool seems to particularly attract them: this is taken on platform 11 of Crewe station, but Liverpool is where they’re going, inflatables and all. Perhaps the photo is flawed because none of their faces can be seen, but maybe that does everyone a favour.

Pace Egg players

Friday 18th April 2025, 2.15pm (day 4,985)

Pace Egg, 18/4/25

It’s Good Friday, so as has been the way for many years, the Pace Egg players set up in Heptonstall and do their thing four times over the day, getting gradually more pissed. The 2pm show is the penultimate one: already quite inebriated, blows with swords that seem mock might just be more risky than one assumes. By the 4pm showing I think positive danger might be afoot. Then again, the same guys have been playing these parts for donkey’s years: I have pictures of this from 2011, before even starting this blog, and there they are. I guess they’ve found ways to mitigate the risks over time. Happy Easter.

End of the week

Friday 28th March 2025, 4.15pm (day 4,964)

Steve and Dex, 28/3/25

The week ends where quite a few of them do. Neither Steve nor Dex look particularly enthused by the prospect, but the weekend remains young.

Keeping the hygienist happy

Wednesday 12th March 2025, 11.20am (day 4,948)

Dental hygiene, 12/3/25

In general, I remember to use interdental brushes on my teeth maybe once a month; except when a visit to the hygienist looms, when I start to do the right things more often in order to assuage my feelings of guilt and potential shame.

Paying one of my twice-yearly trips to the dentist really was the most exciting thing done this Wednesday, hence why this is a photowhack; the one and only picture taken on a given day.

Waiting on platform 4

Tuesday 11th March 2025, 5.50pm (day 4,947)

Victoria platform 4, 11/3/25

More specifically, skulking right down the far end of it, where the trains never stop. It looks like he may have busted the photographer but actually, looking closer up suggests he’s oblivious to his capture for posterity. I quite like the lighting on this one.

In our own worlds

Monday 3rd March 2025, 8.25am (day 4,939)

Commuter portraits, 3/3/25

Onto the 7:56 from Hebden Bridge we pack, a cattle truck most days. But the physical intimacy doesn’t mean social contact. Taking photos in these circumstances is some kind of transgression, isn’t it? But wrapped in their worlds, no one noticed.
