Clare indulges me

Saturday 13th October 2018, 2.45pm (day 2,606)

Clare at Todmorden Borough, 13/10/18

Hopefully the ‘autumn colours’ theme isn’t stale yet. Hard to avoid at the moment, really. Clare indulged me today by coming along for the usual Saturday non-league football fetish, here at Todmorden Borough FC in the wild uppermost reaches of the Calder valley. There haven’t been many portraits of the family on here lately, but let’s change that today. Her blue top against the background is a good contrast. And I like the way the railing stops halfway along.

Womanual labour

Thursday 2nd August 2018, 4.45pm (day 2,534)

Clare does hedge, 2/8/18

Clare proves she is the person around the house to ask when anything resembling manual labour is required. Cooking? That’s usually me.

Quite like the focus and depth of field on this shot, better than usual but achieved by doing nothing more than having a camera with a better lens, as of Tuesday morning. This is the first shot where there is a noticeable difference.

Dice master

Sunday 29th July 2018, 7.35pm (day 2,530)

Joe, D&D, 29/7/18

On the wettest day for months, and trapped in the house, Joe initiates his parents into bizarre Dice Man-style games of chance, in which the family fortune teeters on the edge of a d20. The wine is Clare’s.

Joe, in the eponymous art gallery

Monday 23rd July 2018, 2.20pm (day 2,524)

Joe in Whitworth gallery, 23/7/18

First weekday of the school summer holidays, and Joe Whitworth expresses his opinion at spending this in the Whitworth Art Gallery. Well, it’s five minutes from the place where I’ve worked for thirteen years and I’ve never been, which seeing as it shares my name is pretty shameful. There were work reasons to visit too. But was it exciting? Not really. So I kind of share his yawn.

19th wedding anniversary (with swollen ankle)

Monday 2nd July 2018, 8.30am (day 2,503)

Clare with swollen ankle, 2/7/18

On the way back from Bricktastic yesterday Clare made what I’m sure she will agree was a rather poor attempt at negotiating a particular kerb in Manchester, and as a result spent the day in this position, more-or-less. I did my best to nurse. I’m not very good at it (my sister got the nursing allocation in my family, believe me) but today was our 19th wedding anniversary, so I owe more than a few by now.

Self-portrait with moth

Friday 1st June 2018, 5.05pm (day 2,472)

Self-portrait with moth, 1/6/18

It landed on me. We communed for a minute. I took a photo, it flew off but it had done its job.

God, I’m getting grey. Slowly but surely.

Over the boulders

Tuesday 29th May 2018, 1.40pm (day 2,469)

The boulders of Ill Crag, 29/5/18

“Come on a walk up Scafell Pike, son. It’ll be fun. You can have the pleasure of attaining the highest point in England,” says I, a few weeks back. I’m sure there were points today when Joe cursed me for letting me talk him into this particular hike — particularly here on Ill Crag, one of the subsidiary peaks nearby, and the first outrageous excrescence of boulders into the journey. This picture can also be presented with the benefit of hindsight and knowing that in fact, there’s worse still to come before the summit — all 3,210 feet of it (978 metres) — is attained.

But he made it. And it was a beautiful day.

Pete on his 50th

Sunday 20th May 2018, 2.30pm (day 2,460)

Pete's 50th, 20-5-18

A happy 50th birthday to brother-in-law Pete: we celebrated in Manchester and I tried not to dwell on the fact that in 462 days time, I too will reach the half-century…

Joe inspects his teeth

Wednesday 9th May 2018, 4.30pm (day 2,449)

Joe teeth X-ray, 9/5/18A very low-key day, as yesterday was. Very little happened, and this picture of a picture is as good as it gets today. Still, the teeth are healthy ones — Joe should feel satisfied with this — more so than mine were when I pictured my own X-ray a while back.

Clare, cinema steps (red)

Sunday 18th March 2018, 9.50pm (day 2,397)

Clare, cinema, red, 18/3/18

The film we saw took ninety minutes out of my life that I’m never getting back, but at least the exit provided an opportunity for a picture that doesn’t depict more snow (though the weather does explain the yellow warning sign, because of course we need telling that winter may have made the steps wet). This aside, the red of the coat and of the old ticket booth in the background make a pleasing contrast.
