Joe’s luggage (excerpt)

Friday 10th September 2021, 1.50pm (day 3,669)

Joe's luggage, 10/9/21

The colander. The multipack of Seabrook’s Salt & Vinegar crisps (this is a very Yorkshire brand, in case you did not know). Many more things that are not compressed enough to appear on this shot. He’s ready…. we think…. for tomorrow’s drive north, and for the weeks that are still to come.

Joe — the last supper?

Thursday 9th September 2021, 7.10pm (day 3,668)

Joe, last supper, 9/9/21

The beginning of what will probably be a trilogy of pictures. On Saturday Joe leaves home — at least for university, in Dundee. We took him out for dinner tonight, not very far away (hence this also becomes the 1,500th Hebden Bridge picture to feature on the blog). Of course I sincerely hope this will not be his ‘last supper’. But whether he will ever live here again in the truly permanent sense that he has for the last 18 years, five months and five days (he has never lived in any other house than he does now) — who knows… But that’s the thing about the future, isn’t it? Who knows?

View from Rochdale station

Wednesday 8th September 2021, 11.30am (day 3,667)

View from Rochdale station, 8/9/21

An abstract, really; going monochrome also disguises a main feature of the shot, the impressively blue skies, reflecting another day of pleasantly Mediterranean weather. But this one is about the shapes and the textures.

Heading for campus, early

Tuesday 7th September 2021, 8.05am (day 3,666)

Manchester morning, 7/9/21

Did something I had not done since 28th July, and went to campus. The scenes are much the same as they have ever been, but the weather is certainly very fine at the moment. A ‘goodlife’ indeed, even at 8.05am.

Moth, the sequel (with plums)

Monday 6th September 2021, 5.05pm (day 3,665)

Moth with plums, 6/9/21

Emboldened by the appearance of its fellow moth five weeks ago, this one flew over and demanded I did its close-ups. The plums in the background prove that the tree has eventually borne fruit, despite half of it giving up the ghost.

Unless I’ve miscounted — but you can’t prove this, so might as well take my word for it — this is the 1,499th picture on this blog to be taken in Hebden Bridge. Number 1,500 will be along before the week is out.

Calderdale Way, leg 5

Sunday 5th September 2021, 10.55am (day 3,664)

Calderdale Way, 5/9/21

That path snaking up this hillside on the south edge of Halifax is part of the Calderdale Way, round which Clare and I (and Joe, today) continue to perambulate, when we can. July 11th was the last time we managed some but the weather on this Sunday was too good to ignore: one of those days which proves that on average, if you want really good and reliable weather in this country, come in September.

No helium

Saturday 4th September 2021, 11.35am (day 3,663)

No helium, 4/9/21

Helium is abundant in the universe but not on Earth, as it’s so light, and unreactive, that all it wants to do is escape back into space. I guess this shop has just discovered this fact of chemistry.

End of the week

Friday 3rd September 2021, 5.15pm (day 3,662)

Stacking chairs, 3/9/21

It’s not been the most dynamic week, though work was done. Time to pack up and look forward to the weekend.

Potatoe insult

Thursday 2nd September 2021, 1.35pm (day 3,661)

Bird is a potatoe, 2/9/21

There are so many questions begged by this corner of Calder Holmes Park that I don’t even know where to start. Who is ‘Bird’? Why is s/he called that? Is the superhero graffito connected in any way? What have they done to deserve being called a ‘potatoe’ and has Dan Quayle been involved?

Besses o’ th’ Barn station

Wednesday 1st September 2021, 9.05pm (day 3,660)

Besses o' th' Barn station, 1/9/21

The apostrophes appear to be compulsory in any reference to this place, or the suburbia that surrounds it — the hinterland between Manchester and Bury. Can you think of a more ‘northern’ name for a public transport terminus? I am struggling. Why was I here at 9pm on a Wednesday evening? The usual reasons…. walk, football, etc.
