Welcome meeting

Wednesday 21st September 2016, 10.55am (day 1,854)

Welcome event, 21/9/16

Every year at this time the campus goes from being peaceful and quiet to a heaving mass of people. Still, if it wasn’t for them none of us would be doing what we’re doing. Sam Harris of the International Society at Manchester says hi to the gathered new postgraduates in Education: who collectively I am now responsible for…. (there are a couple of hundred more in the room than pictured here). Let’s hope they all fulfill their potential over the next 11 months or so.

National Graphene Institute

Tuesday 6th September 2016, 9.55am (day 1,839)

Graphene institute, 6/9/16

As a few recent photos have suggested, we are entering a good time of year for dramatic skies. I like the NGI building, it somehow matches its main host substance — which I guess is the point, architecturally. Well, my employers have spent enough on it, so it’d better be good I suppose….

Cake/No Cake

Tuesday 30th August 2016, 8.45am (day 1,832)

Cake or no cake, 30/8/16

Beautiful morning in Manchester. Took two or three photos I was happy with, but all of them before 8.50am; after emerging from a day at work the light had mostly gone. Anyway it’s about time I acknowledged a morning again, after 12 consecutive afternoon shots. The sign points into (or away from) the entrance to Café Muse at the Manchester Museum.

Rock crushing

Thursday 18th August 2016, 3.50pm (day 1,820)

Rock crusher, 18/8/16

One for the occasional series, “machines enjoying doing their jobs”? (A previous entry here….). Or just an additional depiction of the rebuilding of Manchester’s entire city centre? If theories of capitalism and ‘creative destruction’ are right, by 2050 this could become the world norm.

Great Hall, Sackville Street building

Thursday 21st July 2016, 8.50am (day 1,792)

Great hall, 21/7/16

Last day in Manchester, for work purposes, until August 16th. Let’s note this annual moment in time — the threshold of my summer holiday — with a picture of a rather nice room on campus which, grandiose as it is, seems hardly ever to be used.

Ice cream queue

Tuesday 19th July 2016, 2.50pm (day 1,790)

Ice cream queue, 19/7/16

I had a more artistic photo to potentially use today but if I wanted to epitomise the day then this was the one. The sun comes out, the thermometer rises, and a hundred members of Manchester staff and students queued up at the single ice cream van that had the nous to make an appearance on campus.

Campus food stall

Tuesday 31st May 2016, 1.10pm (day 1,741)

Campus food stall, 31/5/16

A row of tents, from which are emerging a range of nice-smelling foodstuffs each lunchtime, seems to have established itself recently on Bridgeford Street on the uni campus. Probably it is just an exam season thing, but they seem to be getting enough business to make it a viable permanent fixture.

Last research methods class of the year

Wednesday 4th May 2016, 3.45pm (day 1,714)

Research methods class, 4/5/16

Bless ’em, look, they’re all working…. only took all year 🙂  We have entered the last week of teaching for me in Manchester in 2015-16.

Edge of campus

Wednesday 27th April 2016, 12.55pm (day 1,707)

Dilworth Street, 27/4/16

Since the teaching term recommenced for me on 13th April I have offered 15 consecutive pictures either at home in Hebden or in Manchester for work. The fence on the left of this shot represents the limit of my present world.

I know this would perhaps be a better photo if the traffic cone in the middle distance weren’t there. But while I could have moved it, I say that on this blog no shot is posed or staged in any way. So let’s see it as just one of those little blemishes that proves the fallibility of all my efforts, or something like that.

Students point cameras at me

Wednesday 13th April 2016, 1.45pm (day 1,693)

Playful horse, 12/4/16

Teaching has restarted after the Easter break so I guess I should put in the occasional appearance on campus. It’s also that time of year when the assignment kicks in on the video production course, and some students develop an urge to point cameras at me and others for educational ends. Shen (left, from China) and Gatya (Indonesia) here anticipate that I will be able to talk about something interesting over the next ten minutes or so.

A rare appearance on the blog for my office: the sharp-eyed may note the newspaper cutting on the wall celebrating Brighton’s League Cup victory over Manchester City in 2009. And why not.
