On the old railway line

Sunday 13th July 2025, 12.10pm (day 5,081)

Old railway line, 13/7/25

Originally I was heading for the Scottish Highlands again today, but a general sense that it was not the right time was confirmed by a dubious weather forecast — not for today, which remained a pleasant day, but for tomorrow, Monday, a forecast of wet weather which I already know as I post this seems to have come to pass. So I made the right decision, stayed in Dundee, and went out on a walk anyway, which included this agreeable stretch of woodland growing along what, a century or more ago, was one of Scotland’s first railway lines. Like many such spots it now exercises legs rather than engines, but is none the worse for it.

Art criticism

Pretentious crap, 18/5/22

I’ve been saving this one up for a while; this piece of anonymous art criticism has been in place for some months now. Could he be saying the same thing about my own work? Pretentious, I hope not. Boring maybe, but that’s life.

Flyover (Mancunian Way)

Tuesday 14th June 2016, 9.45am (day 1,755)

Mancunian Way, 14/6/16

Over 11 years of walking from Manchester Victoria station to my office at uni I have honed my route to reach work in as direct a fashion as possible but to still go down the quietest and most chilled-out streets. I think after 11 years I have finally perfected it. This lane underneath the Mancunian Way is virtually unused now, except by occasional pedestrians like me, the occasional homeless guy and the local graffiti establishment. And yes, this morning it was still raining.

Designated graffiti area

Tuesday 7th May 2013, 9.10pm (day 621)

Designated graffiti area, 7/5/13

Seen in an underpass near the Brisbane River. Has Banksy been visiting down under? (compare with this image, for example.) Or just an emulator? Either way – no one has yet begun adding street art to the wall. Which is a shame. I’m right with Banksy on this one: why should we be forced to look at inane corporate advertising everywhere we turn, but street art is considered ‘vandalism’ – particularly in an otherwise utterly bland underpass like this one? Well folks of Brisbane, it’s just off Coronation Drive, in Toowong, if you fancy trying your hand.
