Bar at the Trades Club

Saturday 10th December 2016, 11.20pm (day 1,934)

Trades bar, 10/12/16

This blog has simple rules, and only a few of them, but I stick to them, and they shape what appears in subtle ways. The one about only using what ambient light is present at the scene certainly does, and is the reason why there end up being relatively few photos like this one. I do have a social life…  but I don’t have expensive lenses and I don’t carry around a tripod so in low-light environments like clubs, it’s just very difficult to produce decent shots. Still, this one isn’t bad, and depending on what happens for the rest of today (I post on Sunday morning) you might yet get another shot from the Trades Club’s ‘Spectrum’ 80s music night for tomorrow, too. A good night out was had all round…

Man wrestling with traffic lights

Friday 9th December 2016, 2.10pm (day 1,933)

Traffic lights, 9/12/16

Not a very exciting day, nor one that necessarily made me feel good about the wider world, so this being Manchester at the moment, here’s a picture of a bloke in a high-vis vest doing something building- or roadworks-related. There’s a lot of it about. At least it’s now the weekend.

The late train

Thursday 8th December 2016, 8:15am (day 1,932)

Late train, 8/12/16

When the 07:42 cattle truck to Manchester turns up half an hour late, like it did this morning, you can be damn sure there’ll be a few people wanting to get on it. Why was I not among them? Because there was another three carriages along three minutes later, with blissful peace on board. Take this picture as an illustration of how humans typically fail to delay gratification.

Winter sky, on campus

Wednesday 7th December 2016, 10.50am (day 1,931)

Winter sky, 7/12/16

Taken on campus; there is almost no green space there, but if you point your camera up at a high enough angle, you can occasionally get shots of trees with no buildings behind…

Sean, on my new phone

Tuesday 6th December 2016, 3.40pm (day 1,930)

Sean on camera, 6/12/16

There is a short version and a long version of how this picture ended up the way it did. The short version is, I was being creative, and the long version is too boring to worry about. Anyway here is our lunchtime seminar speaker, Sean, pictured on my new smartphone, in turn pictured on my usual camera. I like the collage effect of how this one has turned out.

Ducks on patrol

Monday 5th December 2016, 3.30pm (day 1,929)

Ducks on patrol, 5/12/16

There seemed to be a lot of ducks around this afternoon, including this line of at least 15 in a row here (this is only part of the posse). Then again there were a lot of pigeons around too. Perhaps there has been an escalation in the ongoing Hebden Bridge pigeon-duck conflict. These guys certainly look extra-attentive.

Windsor Road, Hebden Bridge

Sunday 4th December 2016, 2.35pm (day 1,928)

Windsor Road, 4/12/16

I’ve been working too many Sundays lately — but today was not one of them. Spent most of it doing very little, so today’s shot is just a scene from the distinctive locality, houses caught by the low sun on another pleasant and mild day. Your morning game — how many chimney pots can you count? I reckon it’s approaching 50.

Hampden Park, before kick-off

Saturday 3rd December 2016, 2.50pm (day 1,927)

Hampden Park, 3/8/16

After we visited Hampden Park last year I decided that at some point I wanted to see a match there. Football tourism, why not. Something different to do other than hang around at home on a Saturday. It is one of the world’s great football stadia and I’d never before seen a Scottish league game in my 47 years on this planet. Hampden is home to Queen’s Park FC, the oldest club in Scotland (150 years old in 2017), and the last remaining bastion of amateurism in senior British football. The crowd for their game with Brechin City was a few hundred strong, swelled by Joe and myself, and we saw the home team win 2-0 (despite Virgin Trains’ best efforts to screw up our day trip).

Bloke on roof

Friday 2nd December 2016, 1.30pm (day 1,926)

Bloke on roof, 2/12/16

Number n+1 in this series, ‘Blokes on Rooves’, and indeed, n+1 in the series ‘Blokes on this particular roof’, only for once I can’t find the older picture to put in a link to it, so you’re just going to have to take my word for it. I like the lines on this picture, the general pattern.

Contact Theatre, exterior

Thursday 1st December 2016, 4.55pm (day 1,925)

Contact Theatre lights, 1/12/16

The Contact Theatre was built in 1999 and adjoins the Ellen Wilkinson Building where I work, helping close off my courtyard (you’ve seen that often enough), but it is a separate entity from the university. It focuses on youth theatre and involves young people in programming and hiring decisions, apparently. The picture also demonstrates that we have reached that time of year where I get to leave the office and it’s already dark. So be it… December it is.
