Warming up for Hallowe’en, the old Nutclough Tavern in Hebden Bridge puts in a bid for ‘spooky castle’ status, unfazed by a stiff recent challenge from the Beyer building at the University.

Found out today that my new camera not only has a 20x telephoto lens on it but also a digital zoom that goes up to 70x. This is just me playing around with it, but I at least feel proud of the timing. Also, this one shows that today, wonder of wonders, was a nice, warm, sunny day with blue skies – perhaps the best one we’ve had since the end of May.
Today at 5.45 am (Norwegian time) there was a transit of Venus across the sun, the last such event until 2117. Through a series of lucky events, I did actually get to see it; not many people would a) be up at that time b) be somewhere where the sun was shining (particularly in Norway), c) have sight of it while sat in an airport departure lounge and d) have access to a pair of plastic, cheap children’s binoculars which nevertheless did project an image of the sun onto a whitewashed wall – on which the tiny black dot that was Venus was clearly visible. I did try to take a photo of it, but that proved beyond me, which I was disappointed about until reflecting that I was, after all, trying to take a picture of the dark side of a planet some 20 million miles away with a compact digital camera. So here’s another picture of an impressive astronomical object instead. (Chosen also for the novelty value of the time: one of the earliest shots on the whole blog.)
Not much happened today but there was some great light and a stunning full moon (well, one day short of full) in the evening. Had to snap it from the moving train as I made my way home, but even if it is a bit of an odd shot, it will certainly do for the daily pic. That’s the moon’s third appearance on the blog, I think.
Spotted on a front patio in the village of Threlkeld this morning. I love it when people have the same sense of humour as me. Joe also found this hilarious.
I don’t feel I’ve been here much lately. However, I’ve now got four weeks at home – more-or-less – so get used to photos of this place (and occasionally Manchester). On mornings like this, it’s no hardship – though the rest of the day was rather worse.
I do own a tripod, but I’m not lugging it to Moscow on the off-chance that I might need it for a night shot. So I did my best to get this one without too much hand-shake. The ‘mountain’ in the distance is the ‘Monument to Corporate Failure’ depicted also on this blog post. Can’t argue with this view of it however. It’s been a beautiful winter’s day here (unlike the weather at home, I’m led to believe) and so it went into the evening.
