A new station

Thursday 25th January 2018, 3.35pm (day 2,345)

Oxford Rd station, 25/1/18

Since early December there has been a whole new version of our train service, extending — at least on paper — to Oxford Road station. This all makes my life mildly more convenient coming home on an afternoon, as long as I can bugger off no later than 4pm; in the morning it makes no difference at all, being quicker to walk between the two stations. For this, your friendly government magnanimously spent £85m on the Ordsall Chord development. Well, I’m sure it’s all part of some bigger plan somewhere. After all, it would be terrible to think that the people in charge of the country’s finances didn’t actually have a clue.

Closed today. And for another six years.

Wednesday 17th January 2018, 4.10pm (day 2,337)

Town Hall closed, 17/1/18

The title — and the sign — refer to the closure, as of today, of Manchester Town Hall for restoration, ‘until 2024’.

You know, I was just thinking that what this city really needs is a significant, very extended, disruptive building project. I’ll be fifty-five fucking years old in 2024.

Ex-ice rink

Thursday 11th January 2018, 2.40pm (day 2,331)

Ex-ice rink, 11/1/18

Don’t worry, Manchester has not made a sudden return to the depths of winter. In fact this is the Christmas ice rink being callously disposed of. That’s your festive fun over for another year, sod off back to work the lot of you. Then again this was the establishment that was publicly playing Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day as early as November 8th this year, so I have no sympathy. Doubtless it’ll be back in ten months.

The M.E.C.D. rises

Tuesday 9th January 2018, 6.35pm (day 2,329)

MECD, 9/1/18

The MECD is the Manchester Engineering Campus Development and will save all our souls, or jobs, or something. What has broken ground so far are just a couple of corner pillars of the whole. Today’s photo is also a sign I pulled a late one at work this evening.

Back on campus

Monday 8th January 2018, 11.10am (day 2,328)

January campus, 8/1/18Since 30th December, a photo that featured a cast of thousands, not a single person has featured on here; but then again there haven’t really been many chances to depict them. Nor was the Manchester campus this morning very busy, it does not crank up again until next week student-wise. This photo is a fine example of how all the litter and recycling bins around the place are good for the environment, but not photography. I suppose here it’s just about tolerable.

Asleep

Tuesday 19th December 2017, 9.35am (day 2,308)

Asleep, 19/12/17

This was the first photo I took today, and while I did in the end go on to take more, I didn’t really need to. As soon as I saw this, I thought – this is me, today. This is how I feel.

Oxford Road, the past

Friday 15th December 2017, 9.10am (day 2,304)

Oxford Road as past, 15/12/17

A bit of play in the processing. But what the hell, I feel like the country’s regressed a century or so. Last-but-one day in Manchester this year — with the state of the trains at the moment, that is no bad thing.

Prefabs and posters

Friday 8th December 2017, 9.15am (day 2,297)

Prefabs and posters, 8/12/17Last day of a long week spent mostly (Monday aside) in Manchester. Was worried it was going to be a day too far but some good things happened and in the morning, at least, it was sunny. So here’s another picture of a building site. But a sunny one.

Empty canal

Tuesday 5th December 2017, 9.35am (day 2,294)

Empty canal, 5/12/17

It’s dim, dull, depressing. I dislike this time of year. Even the Rochdale Canal has given up the ghost in Manchester City Centre. You’d think, as this runs along Canal Street, they’d make an effort. Doubt the bar whose barge-cum-smoking-area lies among the debris is benefiting from this business-wise.

The Charlatans

Saturday 2nd December 2017, 10.10pm (day 2,291)

Charlatans, 2/12/17

Back into Manchester, for this gig at the Apollo…. the wife’s favourite band. It’s impossible to take truly decent photos at a rock concert, at least not without permission to get on the stage and some far better equipment than I can muster (or would be allowed to bring into the venue). Not to mention people standing up in front of you. But I try.
