On Cross Street

Wednesday 18th July 2018, 9.20am (day 2,519)

Homeless on Cross Street, 18/7/18

This is easily the most interesting photo I took today both in terms of its appearance and any semblance of social commentary. On the other hand it opens me up, not for the first time on this blog, to the accusation of voyeurism. But I suppose all photographs, at least, of people, have an element of this: the question is whether the spied-upon assents to or is even aware of the spying. In this case he is not. Yet in a small way does something come from it? I claim this blog is not political, but that’s not always the case. I get angry that a society with pretensions to high civilisation can’t at least find beds each night for a certain number of its people. This man shouldn’t need to spend the night on a pavement in the centre of Manchester. Maybe by showing it I keep it, even in a very tiny way, as an issue for public debate. But perhaps that’s all just rationalisation after the fact.

Street scene, Oxford Road (wet)

Friday 13th July 2018, 9.40am (day 2,514)

Oxford Rd, wet, 13/7/18

No social commentary intended: I think the cyclist was reporting an incident rather than being accused of one. Anyway I only realised later that I might have been picturing that. The main point of the pic was to show that in Manchester this morning it actually rained, the first substantial downpour for weeks. I have been saying how much we needed this — but it was somewhat irritating that it chose to do this when I was out in it without a brolly. I smelt damp for the rest of the day.

Another Manchester Monday morning

Monday 9th July 2018, 7.15am (day 2,510)

By Urbis, 9/7/18

Since the addition of a 6.32 train service from Hebden to Manchester in the mornings I have been braving the earlier start more often as it is a civilised train with leg room. Hence the recent run of 7:00 – 7:45 shots from the city centre. I like the trilogy of red/orange on this shot. The social implications, less so.

“Bring me the Moon…”

Tuesday 3rd July 2018, 7.25am (day 2,504)

Crane and moon, 3/7/18

“Bring me the Moon”, ordered Gru, cackling as by the force of his will alone he controlled his minions and their new big white contraption.

Monday morning ain’t so bad

Monday 25th June 2018, 7.45am (day 2,496)

Glorious Monday, 25/6/18

In work before 8am for the second Monday in a row. But, you know, on a morning like today it’s really not so bad. Hottest day of the year so far.

Jay (on campus)

Tuesday 12th June 2018, 9.30am (day 2,483)

Jay, 12/6/18

A random bird shot yes, but point 1) — you really don’t see many jays, generally and point 2) you certainly don’t see many of them within 15 yards of Oxford Road, the A34, in the absolute midst of the UoM campus. Perhaps now and again we do something right.

And point 3). How did jays end up with quite such specific colouring? Who said, evolution-wise — OK, what you guys really need, to successfully reproduce, is that blue-and-white ‘policeman’s helmet’ style band? I’m sure evolution was the agent — really, I’m a Darwinist — but what drove it?

James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem

Wednesday 6th June 2018, 10.20pm (day 2,477)

James Murphy, 6/6/18

Two LCD Soundsystem gigs in a year… But being brilliant and versatile, they could play a whole different set than last time in London. No one is ever going to do high-quality gig photography from the next-to-back row high up in the circle and with my camera: but it’ll do to document the evening. James Murphy is a master lyricist (“Drunk girls know that love is an astronaut… it comes back, but it’s never the same”) and superb front man yet always remains a slightly chubby, unshaven fortysomething in yesterday’s T-shirt. Which is why we love him.

The morning after

Tuesday 5th June 2018, 7.30am (day 2,476)

Dead glasses, 5/6/18

It is perhaps better not to speculate on the fate of the former owner of these spectacles, forlornly lying abandoned on Canal Street in Manchester early today… One assumes that the position of the, let’s say, splodge is coincidental. But I guess it might not be.

Gargoyle spit

Thursday 10th May 2018, 8.20am (day 2,450)

Gargoyle spit, 10/5/18

Who first came up with the concept of a gargoyle, I wonder? Take what is, in essence, a piece of guttering, and wrap a little monster face around it? Someone must have thought of this first, back in antiquity, and the idea caught on. This one graces the fountain in Albert Square, Manchester, and caught the light quite well on this sunny morning.

Big blue brolly

Friday 27th April 2018, 1.05pm (day 2,437)

Big blue brolly, 27/4/18

The defining feature of the day…  and the last couple, to be honest…. rain. Persistent, grey, cold. But what the hell, it’s the weekend.
