At the Butchers’ Arms ground

Tuesday 5th March 2024, 8.50pm (day 4,576)

Droylsden FC, 5/3/24

The Butchers’ Arms is a football ground, home to Droylsden FC of east Manchester, but there is no intention to class this as a football-related shot. I am pleased with this one because it was the shot I wanted to capture when I pressed the shutter — and it’s always nice when it works out that way, particularly in the evening when there’s not much light to work with. The lonely ‘Book Your Party’ sign is definitely part of the composition.

Leaving the match happy

Saturday 2nd March 2024, 5.05pm (day 4,573)

Leaving Gresty Road, 2/3/24

If they don’t necessarily look happy I can assure you that they were, as these fans of Morecambe FC have just seen their team come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Crewe Alexandra: and at 2-0, no one in the whole ground saw that result coming, believe me. As the set of humanity that counts itself as Morecambe fans includes the wife (and I have to say, increasingly, myself), this was a good turnout of events.

In the crowd

Sunday 18th February 2024, 3.40pm (day 4,560)

Sunday Cup crowd, 18/2/24

The FA Sunday Cup might not seem like much to the rest of the world but about 600 people turned up today at Lower Breck FC’s stadium, in Liverpool, to see one of the quarter-finals. The tension seems to be getting to this guy: he’s about to see the home team (Pineapple) go out 0-2 to the visiting Trooper team from the West Midlands, anyway.

Sunday morning on the Marshes

Sunday 28th January 2024, 10.05am (day 4,539)

Hackney Marshes, 28/1/24

I wouldn’t want to come here in the wind and rain but on a glorious, sunny Sunday morning — which today was — I could not think of much better to do in London than revisit Hackney Marshes. It’s an evocative sight as you come over the bridge at the north end and see this view. The place is so big it’s still about 20 minutes’ walking from here to the other end.

Pudsey Juniors

Sunday 14th January 2024, 11.00am (day 4,525)

Pudsey Juniors, 14/1/24

There are worse things to do on a fairly pleasant Sunday morning, whether for the players or the people watching. Or the people taking photographs, not just of the action but also the backdrop: wind turbines and all.

Unpromising directions

Saturday 30th December 2023, 3.30pm (day 4,510)

Gents entrance, 30/12/23

When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go, but this sign, at the Belle Vue stadium in Wakefield, promises something like the ‘Worst Toilet in Scotland’ (from Trainspotting) waits around the corner. Perhaps fortunately, a gate just round there bars further progress.

Stadium car park

Tuesday 19th December 2023, 7.35pm (day 4,499)

I’m still working, and didn’t leave the house today until after dark, so the choice of picture was, as much as anything else, governed by when and where my rather inadequate camera coped best with the murk and gloom. With some help given by the lights of the stadium ahead, this one won. That does make it two car parks in a row, but hey.

Heading home

Wednesday 29th November 2023, 9.50pm (day 4,479)

Leaving Ewood Park, 29/11/23

The match is over, they are happy their team won (these are Blackburn Rovers fans) but it’s a cold night — time to go home. Which I also tried to do from this point, but another two hours were to pass before I enjoyed its comforts. That’s another story however.

Old Earth, Sunday afternoon

Sunday 26th November 2023, 3.10pm (day 4,476)

Old Earth football, 26//11/23

It’s been a while since the ‘pure football’ post went up, but what the hell, Old Earth — the ground of Huddersfield Amateur FC — has good landscape potential; in fact, the ground’s featured on here twice before, and constitutes the entirety of appearances for the town of Elland (because of course Huddersfield Amateur don’t play in Huddersfield). Sunday afternoon and the women take centre stage: visitors Golcar United, on the ball here in green and black, won this encounter 3-2. The focus seems to have worked out nicely on this shot.

Marley Stadium, Keighley

Saturday 4th November 2023, 3.25pm (day 4,454)

Marley Stadium landscape, 4/11/23

It’s Saturday, it’s in the region of 3pm, there’ll be a few football matches going on around the place I’m sure. The Marley Stadium in Keighley isn’t the most comfortable of venues but the backdrop’s pretty reasonable.
