Sunday activity, Clapham Common

Sunday 19th October 2025, 10.55am (day 5,169)

Clapham Common, 19/10/25

There are, always, worse things to do on a Sunday morning — as long as it isn’t raining, and the showers just about held off until the match finished. Not that the players of either Mala Vida (which I’m sure means ‘Bad Life’ so perhaps it’s irony) or Parthenope FCs responded to my attention by being able to score a goal between them. But hey, the backdrop was pretty good.

Pipework in Manchester alley

Wednesday 17th September 2025, 3.40pm (day 5,137)

Pipework, 17/9/25

I don’t often present the shots in portrait orientation but it seems appropriate today, as the verticals are what matter here. Taken in Manchester, but don’t get used to it — even with the new term coming up. Campus will be about a hundred times busier next week than it was today, but that’s OK, because I’m not going to be there.

The washing’s out

Monday 16th June 2025, 3.25pm (day 5,044)

Washing on Eiffel Street, 16/6/25

I have had a lot of travelling recently but I have already embarked on a sustained period — four weeks, anyway — of Being At Home. Hence… a view from home. There may be more of these coming up.

The buildings of Edinburgh

Sunday 18th May 2025, 11.10am (day 5,015)

Edinburgh buildings, 18/5/25

Scotland doesn’t just do good rural landscapes, but good urban ones too, particularly Edinburgh. A half-hour stopover in Waverley station on the way home allowed a glimpse of this. For once, I don’t mind the lamppost, it seems to fit in just right, as if the light is responsible for the shadow in the gap below it.

On Princess Street

Thursday 6th February 2025, 9.20am (day 4,914)

Princess Street shapes, 6/2/25

A sunny day in Manchester, and a good one for light rebounding off glassy and metallic buildings in various pleasing ways. The block in the middle has been a work-in-progress for at least a year now and so is still neither glassy nor metallic but surely this is planned — for now though it offers a good contrast to what turns out almost like a collage.

Manchester morning

Friday 18th October 2024, 9.10am (day 4,803)

Manchester morning, 18/10/24

A second day in a row spent in Manchester in which I didn’t seem to point my camera at any people, particularly. I like the collage effect here though, and the flash of reflected sunshine. After two long days though, I’m glad it’s the weekend.

Brighouse, looking ‘modestly magnificent’

Saturday 28th September 2024, 12.40pm (day 4,783)

Brighouse buildings, 28/9/24

Brighouse is modest enough, having never given anything of huge significance to the world (except what is reputed to be one of the world’s best brass bands). But it’s an OK place generally, and to look at. Magnificent? Well…. maybe, in a modest sort of way.

Drowned village

Monday 8th June 2020, 1.15pm (day 3,210)

Drowned buildings, 8/6/20

Haweswater supplies water for about 25% of the north-west of England, and when it was built in 1935 it raised the level of an existing lake by nearly a hundred feet and drowned two villages, including Mardale Green at the head of its valley. In times of drought, the old village centre has been known to re-emerge. It is not that dry yet, but the water is stil pretty low and as I passed today, there was evidence of several old buildings on the bed of the lake. Mute witnesses to the injustice of having their village eradicated to slake the thirst of others.
