Platform 1, Manchester Victoria station

Thursday 13th March 2014, 2.45pm (ish…) (day 931)

Platform 1, 13/3/14OK, I am repeating a theme from three days ago, but there you go. I spend a lot of time on trains and railway platforms. This may be the right time to catch platform 1, anyway. As the renovations proceed, over the last couple of weeks it has lost its roof, allowing the continuing pleasant sunshine to fall on those waiting for their trains home. And the roof leaked anyway.

Misty morning

Wednesday 12th March 2014, 8.30am (day 930)

Misty morning, 12/3/14

It was actually another beautiful day today but I saw nothing of this; due to my wanderings yesterday I really needed to get down to do some work today so never left home. So here is that old staple, the view from my house, over Hebden Bridge. The sun did not burn through this mist until well into the morning.

Dry stone wall, Little Yarlside

Tuesday 11th March 2014, 12.30pm (day 929)

Little Yarlside, 11/3/14

A good dry stone wall evolves. It’s built, yes, but with the landscape, not despite it.

Waiting for the Manchester train

Monday 10th March 2014, 8.55am (day 928)

Waiting for train, 10/3/14

When awaiting the 8:56 morning service to Manchester, stand by the first station sign board beyond the edge of the canopy. That’s where the front coach stops and there are plenty of seats. Because it was a gloriously sunny morning, my spot was occupied by these guys today, but their cute dog caught great rim-light so I let them off.

Bubble wrap

Sunday 9th March 2014, 1.45pm (day 927)

Bubble wrap, 9/3/14

We are still getting through the packing for Joe’s birthday presents. Is it possible to resist the lure of bubble wrap?

Clare, packing

Saturday 8th March 2014, 12.40pm (day 926)

Clare packing, 8/3/14

I did virtually nothing today. The pic encapsulates my indolence (those are my feet on lower left) and Clare’s industry, as she packs for her night away performing. Packing in this instance is a matter of pressure and counter-pressure.

Baby broccoli

Friday 7th March 2014, 12.45pm (day 925)

Baby broccoli, 7/3/14

As growing on our window sill at home, getting itself established before we introduce it into the big, wide, adolescent world that lies outside.

Conference venue wall

Thursday 6th March 2014, 2.45pm (day 924)

Edison message, 6/3/14

At a conference today, though in Manchester. Held at one of these ‘workspaces’ festooned with motivational messages. I don’t mind this one, except the subliminal attempt to highlight the value of work (for whom….?); it all looks kind of Photoshopped, but isn’t.

The Slightly Foxed brewers

Wednesday 5th March 2014, 9.00am (day 923)

Slightly Foxed brewers, 5/3/14

This morning I was invited to visit the workplace of my friend Simon, on the right here; he is the boss of the Slightly Foxed Brewing Company. I just had an interest in seeing the process of making the very nice beer his company come out with on a regular basis. We started early — the brewer, also called Simon, had started on the day’s batch at about 6.30am. Here, the two Simons inspect a brew that has been in these fermentation vats for a few days and should have been ready to go out, but it is still too cloudy.

Lancashire & Yorkshire railway mural, Victoria station

Tuesday 4th March 2014, 5.05pm (day 922)

L+Y mural, 4/3/14

I continue to be in a long run of time spent at home and around familiar places. This mural, next to one of the entrances of Manchester Victoria station, has been here a very long time, since the services round here were run by the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, rather than Northern Rail. The red lines on this map were theirs. Some have now gone but quite a number remain actively operational.
