The bollards on Denmark Road

Wednesday 1st May 2019, 12.05pm (day 2,806)

Denmark Street bollards, 1/5/19Another rather unexciting day on campus — the last two weeks have been more like an ‘unsabbatical’. A few shots might have made it today but I pick this one simply to manipulate the stats slightly, as this is taken at the same time as yesterday’s shot, 12:05pm: the first time there have been two consecutive days with the same time since Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd June last year (both at 3.50pm in London). These are the little coincidences that keep me pushing on with this project… well, sometimes.

Weeping willow, by the old bridge

Sunday 28th April 2019, 11.00am (day 2,803)

Willow and bridge, 28/4/19

Another day for spring foliage to fill up the bandwidth. 2,803 days in and there are still some corners of the home town worth depicting. The bridge has been here since 1510, or thereabouts, and seems good for a while yet. Whether the same is true of the photographer, who knows…?

Waiting for the 8:32

Friday 26th April 2019, 8.30am (day 2,801)

HB station, 26/4/19

Plans to minimise my time in Manchester while on sabbatical have not been successful this week (or next). The weather turned during the day, as well, and it was quite cool and rainy by the evening. A pleasant morning on HB station though: just the latest in a number of occasions where the arrangement of fellow passengers on the platform has interested me.

Bookstall, Oxford Road

Tuesday 23rd April 2019, 1.50pm (day 2,798)

Bookstall, Oxford Road, 23/4/19

Back to work properly, but still a relatively balmy vibe over Manchester thanks to continuing good weather (it’s on the change, though), and a general lack of people of the academic persuasion. Why black and white today? Why not? I haven’t posted in monochrome for a while.

Watching me watching him

Friday 19th April 2019, 6.35am (day 2,794)

Deer, Mayroyd Lane, 19/4/19

Was up early to catch a train for a Good Friday walk in the Lake District. Had stupendous weather and lots of nice photos from that will eventually appear on my other blog. But today’s picture isn’t from among them, because this one needs to be seen…. A deer, a very young stag (going on those first brave attempts at antlers), on the side road that parallels the canal for a little while, by the railway station. Astonishing sight so close to town, 6.35 in the morning or not. We both stood stock still for a while staring at each other and he decided he would let me get the camera out. Then he trotted off back down the road — I hope to safety.

Horse above Hebden

Thursday 18th April 2019, 12.30pm (day 2,793)

Horse above Hebden, 18/4/19

Properly back home — this is the first Hebden Bridge pic in exactly a month. The Easter holidays have kicked in, it was a beautiful day, and like this horse, I was doing my best to relax into it all.

The spider’s leg?

Wednesday 17th April 2019, 10.30am (day 2,792)

Spidery crane, 17/4/19

Back to the UK, and in Manchester, for the first time since 21st March. I had set an embargo on pictures of building sites in the city, but that doesn’t necessarily leave a lot to photograph: and this delicate crane did catch the eye this morning. It reminds me of the leg of some insect, or spider, reaching up to tap on the roof above.

On South Melbourne beach

Friday 12th April 2019, 2.35pm (day 2,787)

South Melbourne beach, 12/4/19

Almost the whole population of Australia lives within about an hour’s drive of the coast, making this one of the world’s great beach countries, if not the greatest. It was about time I got to see one on this trip. Not that South Melbourne beach is one of the more glamorous ones — but never mind, it was a beautiful day.

Vinegar

Tuesday 9th April 2019, 12.40pm (day 2,784)

Vinegar ad, 9/4/19

I don’t really know how to caption this one…. so I don’t even think I will try. Especially as the skipping rope, looking closely at it, will light up in the evening and rotate around.

The Singapore River and Boat Quay

Thursday 28th March 2019, 1.30pm (day 2,772)

Singapore, Boat Quay, 28/3/19

Boat Quay is that bit of Singapore that you come to if you are happy to be enticed into one of at least thirty pubs, cafes and/or restaurants that line the riverside: the corrugated iron rooves that cover the al-fresco tables are clear on this shot, taken from 33 floors up. It’s a good-looking city in fact: and far more attractive than Dubai.
