Church of the Ascension, Kolomenskoe, Moscow

Tuesday 13th May 2014, 1.30pm (day 992)

Kolomenskoe, 13/5/14

Second Russian church in three days, and another very beautiful building. This one is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and stands in the park of Kolomenskoe, overlooking the Moskva (Moscow) river, to the south-east of the city centre. It was built in 1532 to commemorate the birth of an heir to the throne, who turned out to be Ivan the Terrible, so perhaps the appeal to divine providence didn’t really work in this case. Bearing that in mind the storm clouds gathering around it this afternoon seem kind of symbolic.

St. Basil’s, sunset

Sunday 11th May 2014, 9.00pm (day 990)

St Basil's, 11/5/14

Let’s face it. This really is one of the world’s best buildings, isn’t it?

Outside the library

Friday 9th May 2014, 2.30pm (day 988)

University, 9/5/14

I do spend time in Manchester now and again you know, when I’m not being distracted by snails (see yesterday) then campus can be a reasonably attractive spot.

Expect to see more of these

Monday 5th May 2014, 10.55am (day 984)

Bicycles, 5/5/14

The first two days of the Tour de France pass through Yorkshire this year, and on Sunday 6th July the race goes right past my front door, literally. The associated publicity campaign has already begun, with a noticeable increase in the number of bicycles to be seen on any given public holiday — as today was. There will be more, I am sure.

New Market, Manchester

Tuesday 29th April 2014, 9.45am (day 978)

New Market, 29/4/14

One of Manchester city centre’s most obscure streets; the recruitment agency you see to the right is the only premises with this as its address, I am sure. But I often pass, and sometimes walk up, it on my way to the office. I like this shot because of the ghostly quality of the female figure and the subtlety of the light.

Drumming puppet, St George’s Square

Sunday 27th April 2014, 11.35am (day 976)

Drummer puppet, 27/4/14

Uneventful day — not much to see, not much going on. I liked this busker’s approach to his craft however, so this can be the second musically themed picture of the weekend.

Near Peace Square, Sheffield

Thursday 24th April 2014, 11.15pm (day 973)

Sheffield night, 24/4/14

Taken on the way back to the hotel after the conference dinner. It’s about time I had a late night shot, I don’t spend all my life going to bed at 8pm you know (though I do spend some of it). Latest shot in a day since 24th October, and the blog’s first one from Sheffield, former home of the British cutlery industry, the pop group Pulp, the World Snooker Championship (right now) and a couple of football teams which I’ve crossed paths with now and again.

Kilburn building, on a quiet day

Tuesday 22nd April 2014, 10.00am (day 971)

Kilburn building, 22/4/14

First day in Manchester for three weeks; also the greyest, dampest day for some time. These things may or may not be connected. But it’s not yet term-time so things were much more subdued than normal.

John the Barber

Tuesday 15th April 2014, 1.25pm (day 964)

John the barber, 15/4/14

This guy is as familiar a face around Hebden Bridge as anyone. Here, on a gloriously sunny afternoon, he surveys the town square from the top of the stairs that lead to the unit within his shop in, alongside the other establishments indicated. If he does have a surname I’m not sure most people know it: everyone calls him John the Barber. I guess that’s how people get surnames in the first place, isn’t it?

Farmers’ Market, the Oval, London

Saturday 12th April 2014, 11.20am (day 961)

Oval farmers market, 12/4/14

I’d rather the bright red cooler wasn’t there but otherwise I think this is a reasonable summation of this event, which Clare & I stopped off in for breakfast after our night out in London (* not depicted on this blog). The queue for the tea stand was interminable. I like the blossoms too, which up north have faded rather, but in London remain in full flower.
