Sea-monster island, near Bergen

Tuesday 3rd February 2015, 3.50pm (day 1,258)

Sea monster island, 3/2/15

As pictured from the final descent into Bergen Flesland airport this afternoon. Tell me I’m not the only person who sees this. I’m just waiting for the moment at which it snaps its jaws open and consumes the yacht without a trace.I have looked for this island (or peninsula, or archipelago) on a map of the area but can’t identify it; perhaps it only reveals its monstrous nature from this very specific angle.

Postscript: As the comment indicates one of my followers has since identified this as the island of Snilstveitøy.

On Watch Hill

Saturday 24th January 2015, 11.05am (day 1,248)

On Watch Hill, 24/1/15

Time for a walk. Watch Hill is near Cockermouth, Cumbria. This is my Zen landscape shot. More will appear on my walking blog in due course (probably tomorrow).

Snowy sunset

Tuesday 20th January 2015, 3.50pm (day 1,244)

Snowy sunset, 20/1/15

A familiar scene in so many ways, but we should keep our eyes open all the time, you never know when the same old view will take on a subtle character that you’ve not noted before.

Maggie rolls in the snow

Sunday 18th January 2015, 10.30am (day 1,242)

Maggie snow, 18/1/15

A stupendous morning. With our house guests (see yesterday) having brought Maggie the labrador I took the opportunity to make the most of it. I never quite got a version of this shot that was fully what I wanted but this is near enough.

The last walk of the Christmas break

Sunday 4th January 2015, 11.45am (day 1,228)

Dog walking, 4/1/15

At least since Christmas Day it’s been a pleasant break with lots of chances to get outdoors. It’s no coincidence that there’ve been plenty of landscape shots on here in the last 10 days, and here’s another one. The whole house goes back to work and/or school tomorrow: which I guess is the case for many of us. H0pe you had a good one.

In the Duddon Valley

Friday 2nd January 2015, 3.15pm (day 1,226)

Duddon Valley, 2/1/15

University doesn’t reopen until Monday so I took advantage of this fact and a reasonable weather forecast to do another Lake District walk (written up in full on my other blog). The Duddon Valley slices through the south-west of the district. Walking in winter like this does lead to more time spent outdoors in the ‘golden hour’, thus plenty of chances for shots like this one.

Environmental capital (old and new)

Monday 29th December 2014, 3.45pm (day 1,222)

Environmental capital, 29/12/14

Pictured towards the end of the 15-mile walk I did today, heading north from Ulverston, Cumbria, and dropping down to the Duddon estuary near Kirkby-in-Furness. The wind farm is offshore; the sheep defiantly onshore, both represent the same thing at heart. More pictures from the day (and I have several that I like) will be on my walking blog later today.

On the way to Old Town

Sunday 28th December 2014, 12.15pm (day 1,221)

In the snow, 28/12/14

I have on occasion been known to describe snow as the devil’s mange, but also must admit that the 90 minutes I spent out in it this morning, under clear blue skies, was probably the most beautiful experience of 2014 thus far. These are the moments worth waiting for in life.

Nutclough Woods, Boxing Day

Friday 26th December 2014, 12.50pm (day 1,219)

Nutclough Woods, 26/12/14

Not an exciting shot. Or a particularly technically adept one. In fact, I can’t claim anything much for this one other than that it was the best I managed on the day. It’s picturesque enough I suppose. Boxing Day, nothing much happened… We got a walk in the woods and some family time.

White Christmas?

Thursday 25th December 2014, 12.30pm (day 1,218)

Xmas shower, 25/12/14

Well, it may have been snow. Only I and the nearest meteorologist know for sure. A happy Christmas to one and all, wherever you may be, whatever you may have done.
