Stopover (brief)

Saturday 19th August 2017, 2.20pm (day 2,186)

Toronto, 19/8/17

I could leave this city unnamed, as a test of your geographical knowledge… but OK, it’s Toronto, meaning Canada makes its debut on the blog. However, the fact that I should have been in a position to capture this shot at least 90 minutes before I did suggests that this country’s national airline might have done a better job with punctuality today. What should have been a comfortable stopover with plenty of time for lunch became a 45-minute plummet through airport corridors and some quality time with US Customs and Border Protection (who seem to have colonised their friendly neighbour to the north already). This is not going to be the least stressful journey I have ever undertaken, and it’s only half done yet.

Joe and the Old Man

Wednesday 9th August 2017, 3.10pm (day 2,176)

Joe and the Old Man, 9/8/17

I might be ‘back at work’ but it’s still the summer break for Joe and he needs encouragement to do a little more than just sit at home when there’s so much pleasant countryside out there. He was moved to say that the Lake District ‘is quite a nice looking place isn’t it’, today. Well, yes it is. And to have some father-son time: hence one reason for the title of this shot. That’s also Coniston Old Man ahead: what it should look like, out of the mist (cf. the picture taken two weeks ago today).

View from Blake Fell

Monday 31st July 2017, 12 noon (day 2,167)

Clouds and Buttermere, 31/7/17

Last day of our Lake District holiday, and therefore the last chance for a landscape shot — well, for a couple of weeks anyway. This does epitomise how the weather’s been this week; though can’t really represent not how cold and windy it was up here when the shot was taken. At least it wasn’t raining. Time to go home though, after fifty-five miles done on foot this week, I need a rest…

The lake in the distance is Buttermere, by the way. The distinctively-shaped fell behind it is Fleetwith Pike. This picture was taken from just below the summit of Blake Fell, here at about 1700′ above sea level.

Sheep on Rough Crag

Friday 28th July 2017, 3.50pm (day 2,164)

Sheep on Rough Crag, 28/7/17

Back out into the mountains — for a long and rather difficult walk from Coniston to Eskdale. This shot was taken towards the end, by which time I had already done 12 miles and was feeling rather knackered. The sheep seen here probably wondered what I was doing out on their heaf. I was wondering this too, to some extent.

Old winding gear, Coniston Old Man

Wednesday 26th July 2017, 2.15pm (day 2,162)

Winding ropes, 26/7/17

Coniston Old Man rises to 2633 feet above the town of Coniston, and its rocks have long been the source of much of the place’s income — whether as nowadays, where people like me turn up and want to climb on them, or in the past, where they were mined and quarried to a great extent. This is the only major Lakeland fell where you encounter the ruins of so much industrial activity, negotiating, among other things, the remains of this old iron ropeway as you haul yourself up the fell.

Great Langdale

Tuesday 25th July 2017, 5.15pm (day 2,161)

Sunbeams in Langdale. 25/7/17

I’m a few days behind, due to wi-fi issues at the first place we stayed this week. But oh yes — I’m definitely in the Lake District 🙂

Morecambe Bay, looking to the Lake District

Monday 24th July 2017, 3.00pm (day 2,160)

Morecambe Bay, 24/7/17

The title of the shot is as much aspiration as description. Today I am in Morecambe. Tomorrow, I will be over in the Lake District, on the other side of the Bay; the fells forming the horizon are (left to right) Dow Crag, Grey Friar and Coniston Old Man. Let’s have a week off work, somewhere beautiful. That’s a decent aspiration….

Drained

Friday 14th July 2017, 1.05pm (day 2,150)

Empty reservoir, 14/7/17

Some rivers and lakes around here are somewhat lower than is usual, that is true, but this picture does not represent some heroic water shortage in the north-west of England. Rather, the Warland reservoir is being renovated, so has been drained, its bed exposed and returning to its natural state. There are some bleak panoramas up on the moors round here and the lack of water here doesn’t do this particular one any further favours.

First sunset since Friday

Wednesday 21st June 2017, 8.55pm (day 2,127)

Sunset over Manchester, 21/6/17Today was the summer solstice, the Northern Hemisphere’s longest day. But seeing as I’ve been north of the Arctic Circle since Saturday morning this was a regression, in daylight terms. No problem with that however. The 24-hour daylight was nice in some ways but it could become monotonous after a while. Shot taken from above Manchester on the final flight home: the city centre is just visible down there in the haze.

Aursfjord

Sunday 18th June 2017, 6.10pm (day 2,124)

Aursfjord, 18/6/17

Did I blow my whole wad yesterday with a picture of the Norwegian landscape? Ah, what the hell. There’s plenty more where that came from.
