Owter Zeds: 40th anniversary gig

Saturday 5th October 2024, 10.15pm (day 4,790)

Calling a band an ‘institution’ is something of a double-edged compliment, as it suggests they have been around a while — and the local Hebden Bridge institution that is (or are) the Owter Zeds were, indeed, celebrating their 40th anniversary at the Trades Club tonight, a gig I came all the way back from London to attend. And plenty of fun it was; if you like a bit of ska, you could do worse. The sax player gets on the blog for the second time, the first being over 10 years ago, when they were mere striplings of just 30 years’ experience.

Gig crowd (or, the zombie apocalypse)

Tuesday 24th September 2024, 8.55pm (day 4,779)

Zombie crowd, 24/9/24

My mediocre kit is never going to take crystal clear photos in very low light, even if I do crank the ISO setting up to 1600 or whatever. But here, the lack of clarity is just the point. Surely the gentleman to the left is about to emerge from some horrible transformation and begin consuming human flesh. Although in the end, he recovered, and we all got on with watching the evening’s entertainment (Tom McRae, as it happened).

Clare at the bar (Trades Club)

Friday 29th September 2023, 9.10pm (day 4,418)

Trades Club bar, 29/9/23

A Friday night out, in the kind of lighting which makes taking photos with my point-and-click gear an activity dependent mostly on luck. Great action shots of people dancing don’t really emerge. But this photo of Clare getting the first beers of the evening is at least notable for this being the point when she overtakes Joe as the most-often featured person on here — a status that, all things considered, she will almost certainly now retain.

Saturday night, Trades Club

Saturday 24th September 2022, 9.25pm (day 4,048)

Trades Club, 24/9/22

It’s increasingly easy to find excuses not to go out on a Saturday night, or indeed a Friday or any other night, at least if ‘going out’ means ‘being expected to move energetically in response to the promptings of rhythmic music’, i.e. dancing. But I just about managed it at the Trades club this evening. And it was welcome enough.

Disco (throwback)

Friday 30th July 2021, 10.15pm (day 3,627)

Disco, 30/7/21

Discos/nightclubs — possibly the worst venue for photography, at least with my mediocre equipment. But, I don’t care! Because we were out in a nightclub! How 2010s is that?

Friday night out

Friday 1st March 2019, 11.25pm (day 2,745)

Red Helen night, 1/3/19

Dreadful photo, but a fun night out in the Trades Club. This is about the best that can be done with my camera in such an environment, but evening photos have disappeared from the blog lately and I do want to acknowledge that now and again, I do still have a social life.

Trades Club

Saturday 16th June 2018, 10.10pm (day 2,487)

Trades club dancers, 16/6/18

It is of course impossible to produce a decent photo of people who are moving, in club lighting, with my crappy camera, without using a flash.

But one can try, dammit. One can try.

Trades club bar

Friday 23rd March 2018, 10.40pm (day 2,402)

Trades bar, 23/3/18

Great night out, thanks again to the wife and Red Helen for the music. Terrible photography, but that’s 10.40pm on a Friday night for you.

Trades Club, Friday night

Friday 12th January 2018, 9.50pm (day 2,332)

Glitterball, 12/1/18

Planet Glitterball oversees the fun and frolics at the Friday night disco in the Trades Club. I remember going out. Not necessarily coming home, but that’s a story for Saturday morning. Perhaps.

Red Helen

Friday 17th November 2017, 9.25pm (day 2,276)

Red Helen, 17/11/17

Red Helen DJs at the Nutclough City Limits night at the Trades Club every couple of months or so. She used to run the legendary Brighton Beach nights in Leeds. We are lucky to have her. This woman is one of the few people in the world who can get me dancing. As happened tonight.
