First World problem

Thursday 29th July 2021, 10.35am (day 3,626)

Empty shelves, 29/7/21

Recently, Britons have been staying at home because a computer program — which they are not obliged to install — has been telling them to. As a consequence, holes appear in the supply chain, not of everything — you can see there’s still plenty of booze on the shelves — but of certain things. This is the crisp and snack aisle at the Co-op. All that remains are two tubes of Pringles and an anomalous, lonely tup of Chupa Chips. A First World problem for sure, but nevertheless, a bizarre demonstration of the Butterfly Effect if you ask me. Someone designs an app in a certain way; a few months later, there are no crisps, tinned tomatoes or frozen vegetables available for purchase.

Waiting

Saturday 18th November 2017, 12.25pm (day 2,277)

Waiting dog, 18/11/17

In 2017, particularly since early June, I have been quite mobile, with lots of photos taken elsewhere. Where there have been bouts of time spent mainly at home they haven’t lasted long. But for the rest of the year, at least, this will change; if I do go elsewhere it’ll be for a walk or a football match, and that’ll be all. We are on Hebden time for a while. I hope I seem happier about this than this dog did today.

Waiting in the rain

Monday 21st November 2016, 8.55am (day 1,915)

Waiting, 21/11/16

Wettest day for months today — a pretty grim day all round. I was not the only one who’d rather have been inside. Fortunately I spent most of it working at home, and this was a photowhack — the one and only picture I took today.

Rebuilding the Co-op

Saturday 12th March 2016, 11.05am (day 1,661)

Rebuilding Co-op, 12/3/16

The Co-operative supermarket in Hebden Bridge has been closed since the morning of 26th December when, like the rest of the town centre, it was submerged under six feet of water.  You still can’t go in but I took this shot through the door. The rebuilding continues and apparently it will be fully open again by next weekend.

First day here, first cliché

Saturday 26th January 2013, 11.25am (day 520)

Vegemite, 26/1/13

First day in Australia (at least on this trip – I’ve been here once before, in May 2011 for two weeks); and it’s Australia Day. So let’s get the first cultural icon into the blog. I fully intend to get a picture of a kangaroo, a koala and a surfer in before I leave. Though possibly not all on the same photo. Do people still wear those hats with corks round the rim?

This stuff’s not a patch on Marmite by the way. Interpret that how you will.

She’ll be back soon

Monday 24th December 2012, 11.55am (day 487)

Upset dogs, 24/12/12

Last-day Christmas food shopping at the Co-op in Hebden Bridge today. These four dogs (the fourth one is a tiny shrivelled black curly thing, hiding in the background with its red-coated hindquarters just visible) were desperately awaiting the return of their mistress outside and yapping an endless yap that reverberated through the whole store. OK, I don’t know 100% that the owner was female, but I dunno, just a guess.
