Just about on duty

Sunday 22nd February 2026, 5.40pm (day 5,295)

St Helens steward, 22/2/26

It may seem surprising that these seats were not filled for a Merseyside derby, but this was Liverpool v Everton in the Women’s FA Cup, and also not being played in the city of Liverpool but in the stadium of St Helens rugby league team. There was a reasonable crowd packed into one side of the ground but the other three stands were mostly left empty. Someone’s still got to be ready to retrieve the balls, though. Or maybe this guy’s simply taking a break and hoping no one’s noticed.

This shot could be in sharper focus, but never mind, I like its repetitive character.

Memorial Gardens

Monday 17th November 2025, 12.55pm (day 5,198)

Memorial Gardens, 17/11/25

No significant commentary today, just a pastoral scene on a relatively pleasant day of weather, one where I was glad I was not sweating it out in Manchester or some other such office space. It’s getting chilly, though.

Flower in the rain

Wednesday 1st October 2025, 6.20pm (day 5,151)

Flower in rain, 1/10/25

October 2025 began without a great deal happening, at least not to me. For now I am staying in my little bubble. Maybe this shot is representative of that, somehow, but maybe it’s just a nice splash of colour.

Atrium, University of Gibraltar

Monday 17th March 2025, 1.35pm (day 4,953)

Uni of Gib, 17/3/25

The University of Gibraltar is why I am here, indirectly anyway. It is one of Europe’s newest, founded in 2016 and built into a converted old barracks. It’s also one of Europe’s smallest: what you see here is a considerable proportion of the whole. Something about it reminds me of the atrium where Heywood Floyd and the Russian scientists have a conversation in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s the red-and-white theme that does it. And no, there didn’t seem to be any students around. They’re all ‘on placement’, apparently.

Post-movie

Friday 30th August 2024, 10.00pm (day 4,754)

Post-movie, 30/8/24

I have several times tried to capture a version of this shot, but it’s never really worked before. I’m quite happy with this one, though. Most of the thirty or so people who were watching have already departed and yet still the credits roll, down to the stage where only the assistant catering key grip’s mother is still watching them. The movie? Trap — which, I suppose, was OK, at least for a while.

Outside Jamestown market

Tuesday 14th May 2024, 5.10pm (day 4,646)

Outside the market, 14/5/24

A few days to go on this trip to St Helena and work has definitely been keeping me busy. On the opposite side of the street I was sat there at just past clocking-off time, feeling very much like these guys. Yes, the butt bin to the right annoys me. But only slightly.

Bus power

Wednesday 29th December 2021, 12.30pm (day 3,779)

Bus chargers, 29/12/21

The year is not going to end excitingly, but at least one can still go out, as I did today, even if just to do some shopping. This is an abstract, but the focus is right and it’s the shot I intended. I noticed the possibility of a shot of these chargers between the seats as the bus rumbled over the hills to the north, but no chance to capture it until we had stopped moving; meaning that Oxenhope can here get another day on its tally.
