Pace Egg players

Friday 18th April 2025, 2.15pm (day 4,985)

Pace Egg, 18/4/25

It’s Good Friday, so as has been the way for many years, the Pace Egg players set up in Heptonstall and do their thing four times over the day, getting gradually more pissed. The 2pm show is the penultimate one: already quite inebriated, blows with swords that seem mock might just be more risky than one assumes. By the 4pm showing I think positive danger might be afoot. Then again, the same guys have been playing these parts for donkey’s years: I have pictures of this from 2011, before even starting this blog, and there they are. I guess they’ve found ways to mitigate the risks over time. Happy Easter.

In the fountain

Friday 12th August 2022, 4.45pm (day 4,005)

In the fountain, 12/8/22

The media would like us to think that all is heading for some kind of climate-related disaster, but personally I’m quite enjoying the decent weather this summer, which seems to have extended out to Northern Ireland, at least this week. And she is having a good time in it too.

Play with me

Sunday 18th April 2021, 3.40pm (day 3,524)

Play with me, 18/4/21

“I don’t know who you are, but play with me anyway! Look, I have the Thing ready!”

Sunday afternoon — in a pub beer garden once again. Well, it’s still a novelty, and the sun is still shining.

River frolics

Tuesday 23rd May 2017, 4.35pm (day 2,098)

River frolic, 23/5/17

The photo was taken, and it does epitomise what was a wonderfully sunny and warm day, particularly later on. But I frankly don’t really care what it was like or about, on what was another stellar day in recent British history. I was supposed to be going to Manchester today, but had an enforced day at home because of the closure of Manchester Victoria station for reasons of which I am sure you’re probably aware. At the moment I feel angry with just about everything.

Love Hurts?

Wednesday 18th May 2016, 2.10pm (day 1,728)

Love hurts, 18/5/16

Today marked the first time ever I have been to an academic conference and witnessed a play as my after-lunch session; let alone one aimed at teenagers and dealing with the issue of emotional relationship abuse. But I have to say Love Hurts? was very good. Well done to Sue Moffat of the New Vic theatre and her three talented actors. The woman on the right is playing the victim, the guy on the left, her friend (and mate of the perpetrator).

Playful

Tuesday 12th April 2016, 11.10am (day 1,692)

Playful horse, 12/4/16

Now there’s an animal that knew how to perform for the camera. It even did it twice, after I didn’t quite get the shot the first time round.
