The Railway diaspora

Saturday 23rd April 2016, 3.35pm (day 1,703)

Railway diaspora, 23/4/16

Since the Boxing Day floods took out 95% of the town centre four months ago, five of Hebden Bridge’s pubs have reopened: the White Lion (which never shut), the Old Gate, the Crown, the Trades Club and the Fox and Goose. However, this leaves seven that remain closed: the White Swan, the Shoulder of Mutton, Nelson’s, the Sports & Social, Stubbing Wharf, the Albert and the one that I and many friends feel most keenly, the Railway. Martin and Shelley, pictured here, are members of the Railway diaspora, drinkers in exile (in this case in the Old Gate). Perhaps we will all return home some time soon but to be honest at the moment there is little sign of it.

Back Pool Fold, Manchester

Friday 22nd April 2016, 4.00pm (day 1,702)

Back Pool Fold, 22/4/16

Now here’s a back alley, discovered as I try ever more to hone the directness of my walking route through Manchester city centre on a given working day. I like the detail on this shot — lots of things to see, from bottom to top, but all epitomising the idea of an alley, a trench in the urban landscape.

Manchester tram, Aytoun Street

Thursday 21st April 2016, 8.40am (day 1,701)

Manchester tram, 21/4/16

I cannot think of anything much to say about this photo today, although I quite like it. Clare, sat by me at this point, says however that she likes ‘the pinks, the blues and the purples’, so now you know what she thinks, anyway.

Angry bird

Wednesday 20th April 2016, 9.25am (day 1,700)

Mean bird, 20/4/16

“I ain’t no jackdaw. I ain’t got no stoopid hair in my beak. Want this bread? Come and get it, asshole.”

The Pub Zoo

Tuesday 19th April 2016, 4.15pm (day 1,699)

Pub Zoo, 19/4/16

An unnecessarily tautological name for a drinking establishment, perhaps. Who cares on such an utterly beautiful day as today.

Dinner preparations

Monday 18th April 2016, 5.25pm (day 1,698)

Ingredients, 18/4/16

Another one of those exciting Mondays working at home, where I need to crank up the creativity not only to take the photo but also to think of a pithy commentary. Which, today, I can’t. Happy Mondays.

Wood elf, Hardcastle Crags

Sunday 17th April 2016, 11.05am (day 1,697)

Wood elf, 17/4/16

Far too lovely a morning to stay in. Fortunately we have these great pieces of countryside short walks from my house. Sping has not yet fully sprung, but it’s getting there.

Playmobil Man (Silly Billy’s, reopened)

Saturday 16th April 2016, 11.35am (day 1,696)

Playmobil man, 16/4/16

Since being collectively taken out by the floods on 26th December, about two-thirds of Hebden Bridge town centre has reopened. There have been some subtle moves around, as well — like here, with the toy shop, Silly Billy’s, translocating to a new location on Old Gate and reopening in the last week or so. Playmobil Man serves as an advert to draw the punters in — let’s hope it does so.

The rook doesn’t quite pull it off

Friday 15th April 2016, 7.50am (day 1,695)

Rook and hair, 15/4/16

This rook was looking quite butch in the viewfinder but he rather spoils it with the hair poking out of his beak. No, it’s not on my camera lens, or on your computer screen — it is indeed poking out of his beak.

ERRATUM: Apparently this is a jackdaw, not a rook — my mistake….

Legless

Thursday 14th April 2016, 6.00pm (day 1,694)

Legless, 14/4/16

OK, it’s a pretty obvious optical illusion, but what the hell, after a long day at work spent almost completely walking around from one place to another (not to mention my standard 5-mile round-trip hike there via two railway stations), it summed up my day.
