Friday market (not ‘Black’)

Friday 29th November 2024, 4.10pm (day 4,845)

Friday market, 29/11/24

Another day spent almost entirely in my office at home, working, and not emerging until after the sunlight was mostly gone. The Friday market in town was still open at this point, though only just, and I’m sure this guy is considering packing up his clocks and jewellry and calling it a day.

I go monochrome here simply because it feels right for the shot and it stops the bright green stripes at the top dominating it. It is not a ‘Black Friday’ reference. I hate that bollocks, in fact: especially because, as various recent conversations about this marketing wheeze have proven, virtually no one in the UK — consumers, retailers, the media, anyone — actually understands the derivation of the term. Be honest — do you know where it comes from? (American readers don’t get to answer this.)

Sock stall (Norwegian)

Friday 15th November 2024, 3.20pm (day 4,831)

Sock stall, 15/11/24

According to the advertising for this stall on Hebden Bridge’s Friday market, Norwegian socks are the best in the world. Who am I to argue? It does get pretty cold and wet in Norway. Anyway, if you want them, you now know where to come and get them (outside Norway).

Fresh food for sale…

Thursday 22nd August 2024, 11.45am (day 4,746)

Market stall, 22/8/24

The Thursday market is the place to come in Hebden Bridge for fish, vegetables, food of all kinds, and I certainly indulged today. Was it warm? No — autumn is in the post, I feel, but that’s why we stock up with food at this time of year.

Hebden Bridge market, c. 1924

Saturday 22nd June 2024, 3.35pm (day 4,685)

Market circa 1924, 22/6/24

I imagine this scene may well have looked much the same 100 years ago. Only the blue plastic Co-op bag really gives it away. A good day today — proof that while travel can be good, it’s almost always nice to come home. And the sun was shining too.

Outside Jamestown market

Tuesday 14th May 2024, 5.10pm (day 4,646)

Outside the market, 14/5/24

A few days to go on this trip to St Helena and work has definitely been keeping me busy. On the opposite side of the street I was sat there at just past clocking-off time, feeling very much like these guys. Yes, the butt bin to the right annoys me. But only slightly.

Hair shop

Friday 29th December 2023, 11.45am (day 4,509)

Hair shop, 29/12/23

Believe me, I’m one of these middle-aged guys who has gone the other way when it comes to hair loss, and I don’t need any. Not on my head and certainly not on/in my eyebrows, ears and nose, thank you very much. But clearly there is a market for the stuff, at least among the women who shop in the Arndale Market, Manchester. And there was me thinking they did it naturally — like me (last haircut, 2/10/19 and still counting).

Cheese

Sunday 10th December 2023, 1.25pm (day 4,490)

Cheese stall, 10/12/23

Now here’s the polar opposite to Monty Python’s Cheese Shop. If you don’t get the reference, just be comforted by the enormous variety here. Time to buy some Xmas presents — and maybe squirrel a few away on my own account.

Yellow, and stripes

Sunday 20th August 2023, 2.40pm (day 4,378)

Flowers and market, 20/8/23

I did follow England’s efforts in this morning’s World Cup Final, but I didn’t go watch it anywhere organised, I don’t like watching football on the TV whomever is playing. But they lost, so in lieu of pictures of any celebrations, here is an indication that August might finally be giving summer a go. I don’t know what these flowers are, sorry, but there are plenty of them blooming down by the market at the moment.

How to rule the world

Friday 13th January 2022, 2.45pm (day 4,159)

DVD stall and boot, 13/1/23

Second consecutive shot taken at the outdoor market, but hey. The guy on the DVD and CD stall takes a casual attitude towards his merchandise. One can either rule the world by wearing the shoes… or, presumably, get hints by watching the various Marvel movies which all seem to be based around much the same theme.

Thursday market

Thursday 12th January 2023, 10.50am (day 4,158)

Thursday market, 12/1/23

God, more of this crud. 2023 has not so far had vintage weather. But in a week’s time, I will be in the Southern Hemisphere, and whatever else goes on there, I’m damn sure the weather will be a lot warmer, and a lot lighter.
