Main entrance, Sackville Street building

Monday 24th February 2014, 4.20pm (day 914)

Sackville bulding entrance, 24/2/14

Monday is a regular Manchester day in term-time. Some more random campus architecture then. The Sackville building was part of UMIST until that institution was eaten up by the University of Manchester in 2004. Not for much longer though — I believe the basic plan is to sell it off fairly soon (it’s been gradually emptied over the last few years) and in the near future will probably become luxury apartments with a bar on the ground floor that prices its drinks at a level designed to ensure the plebs don’t get in.

Outside Selfridges, Manchester

Wednesday 12th February 2014, 4.15pm (day 902)

Outside Selfridges, 12/2/14

I will only add that tonight is a foul night, a real stinker. I hope this guy, and the thousands like him, end up somewhere warm, safe and dry.

Learning Commons building

Monday 10th February 2013, 3.55pm (day 900)

Learning Commons, 10/2/14

To mark day 900 of the blog let’s return to this common theme — Well-Lit Moments on the Manchester University Campus. And as it is a round number day, I’ve got round to updating the Best of the Rest and Stats pages, if you are interested (though I admit I do these mainly for myself…).

Balloon Street, Manchester

Tuesday 21st January 2014, 9.15am (day 880)

Balloon Street, 21/1/14

Yet another beautiful morning. What a difference a year makes — on 21st January 2013, Hebden Bridge was under several inches of snow. This is Manchester, and customers of the Co-Operative Bank who have long seen ‘1 Balloon Street’ as the corporate address on their correspondence may be vaguely interested to see that this is, indeed, Balloon Street itself. Part of Co-op HQ on the left and (I think) right, the Shudehill bus station straight ahead, and the morning sun doing its best to reach around the corner (the patch to lower right being a reflection). No cars run along this street now but yes, I did check that no trams were coming before I got the shot.

Fire exit, The Academy

Thursday 16th January 2014, 11.05am (day 875)

Fire exit, Academy, 16/1/14

The Academy is the University of Manchester’s principal music venue, and has appeared a couple of times on this blog from the inside, most recently a few weeks ago when we saw Gogol Bordello there. So here it is from the outside, one of its facets anyway, a study in line and shadow.

Stairwell, Ellen Wilkinson Building

Tuesday 14th January 2014, 2.00pm (day 873)

Stairwell, Ellen Wilkinson, 14/1/14

Snapped for no other reason than I liked the image. There is no deeper agenda. Another pleasantly sunny winter’s day in Manchester.

Turing Building, University of Manchester

Thursday 9th January 2014, 1.40pm (day 868)

Turing Building, 9/1/14

Rainbows are a kind of cheap shot, but they usually offer something — you at least know there will be colour, shadow and light all around somewhere. This was taken from inside, after I glimpsed the possibility while drifting off in the post-lunch death slot at the seminar I attended today. There’s a double rainbow visible if you look closely.

Incidentally, this is Alan Turing’s second memorial appearance on the blog after his statue made it back last year.

Bus stop near ‘Revolution’, Oxford Road

Tuesday 7th January 2014, 10.10am (day 866)

Bus_stop, 7/1/14

The period since Christmas Eve has been very relaxing, but not very photographically inspiring. Three things have not helped this. One: I’ve been mostly isolated at home. Two: it’s been gloomy and grey. Three: the Mac died on 9th December and as yet had not been replaced.

Three things then happened today: One, I left the dale, only to Manchester, but it’s a change of scene; Two: the sun came out (in the morning anyway); Three: I have a Mac back 🙂  I like this picture, first one I’ve really thought was decent since Christmas Eve.

Oxford Street, Manchester

Thursday 19th December 2013, 9.40am (day 847)

Oxford Street, 19/12/13

I’ll post this now partly because I am on a machine that works properly (not consistently true for me at the moment, nor will it be until into January now), but also because the sun has long disappeared behind clouds: this beautiful morning light was, unlike on Tuesday, all we got today. So I doubt I’ll get a better shot later. Having done this walk a lot, I know where the sun shines in Manchester city centre on a winter’s day by now, and at around this time on Oxford Road/Oxford Street (its continuation), it shines right down the road as if it was the avenue of a stone circle like Avebury. In fact, considering it’s the solstice on Saturday, perhaps I am on to something there.

Subway under Brook Street, Manchester

Friday 13th December 2013, 8.50am (day 841)

Subway, 13/12/13

There is often beauty in unexpected places. This is all done with concrete, graffiti and strips of fluorescent light.
